Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW MASTER

Two months later. State Penitentiary.

I sat behind the reinforced glass partition, holding the heavy plastic phone receiver to my ear.

On the other side of the glass, Mark sat in his orange jumpsuit, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"Why, Maya?" Mark sobbed into the receiver. "I was your father. I made mistakes, but I loved you! Why did you plant my DNA on that ring? Why did you frame me?"

I leaned closer to the glass, a cold, calm smile spreading across my face.

"I didn't frame you, Dad," I whispered into the microphone, ensuring my voice was low enough that only he could hear. "I just finished what Lily started."

Mark blinked, confusion washing over his face. "What?"

"Lily didn't die four years ago because of an accident," I said. "She survived the crash. She lived for three hours in the hospital before someone pulled her oxygen tube."

Mark froze, his breath catching in his throat.

"I watched you do it through the room window, Dad," I said, my voice as hard as ice. "I was fourteen years old, hiding in the hospital closet. I saw you sign the DNR order and turn off the machines because Julian promised to pay off your debts if Lily didn't testify about the fraud."

Mark’s face drained of every drop of color. He slammed his hands against the glass. "You... you knew?!"

"I knew everything," I said softly. "I waited four years. I played the weak, helpless daughter. I let you mentally abuse me. I let Sarah slap me. I let you scream at me. I waited until you were all so desperate, so tangled in your own webs of lies and fake pregnancies, that you wouldn't see me setting the trap."

I stood up, adjusting my jacket, and hung the phone receiver back on the hook.

Mark pounded wildly on the glass, screaming incoherently as the prison guards grabbed his arms and forced him back into his seat.

I turned my back on him and walked out of the visitor room into the bright, warm sunlight—finally free, with the entire Miller fortune secured under my legal name, and justice served for my sister.
