Chapter 10 - The Horizon AheadOne year after the dramatic explosion at the family barbecue, the Palm Beach pediatric recovery center was fully operational and thriving.

On a bright, crisp Saturday morning, Catherine walked down the wide stone pathway leading toward the ocean. The air smelled of salt water, blooming hibiscus, and fresh sea spray. She wore a simple white linen dress—not as a costume or a provocation, but as a symbol of pure, unadulterated new beginnings.

As she reached the edge of the terrace where that fateful teak table had once stood, she paused.

The old table was long gone, replaced by comfortable benches where families and recovering children could sit together and look out at the endless blue horizon.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, expecting an email from the foundation’s board or an update from her legal team. Instead, it was an alert from a national financial news app: VALE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES RECORD-BREAKING GRANT FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH.

Catherine smiled, locking her phone and sliding it back into her pocket.

She looked out across the Atlantic, watching a single white sailboat glide smoothly across the silver-blue water, moving past the breakers toward the open sea.

She had walked into that family barbecue three years ago as a prisoner in a golden cage, carrying the weight of a dynasty on her shoulders while her husband plotted her humiliation. She had walked out carrying divorce papers and federal warrants.

Now, she owned the horizon.
