Chapter 27 - The Trap springs AnewBack at her private residence in Coral Gables, Catherine Vale Ashford sat at her marble kitchen island drinking a cup of chamomile tea.

Her phone buzzed sharply on the polished stone surface.

She glanced down at the screen. It wasn't a standard email notification; it was an encrypted high-priority alert from the Vale Foundation’s advanced cybersecurity firewall: UNAUTHORIZED INTRUSION ATTEMPT DETECTED. IP TRACED TO DOWNTOWN MIAMI PENTHOUSE. HONEYPOT FILE ‘PROJECT VALE – LEGACY COMPLIANCE’ ACCESSED.

A slow, cold smile touched the corners of Catherine’s lips.

A honeypot file. A deliberately planted, encrypted digital trap containing fabricated, beautifully watermarked historical mock-documents designed specifically to lure out corporate scavengers and amateur hackers.

She picked up her phone, unlocked it, and dialed a direct, secure number.

“Marcus?” Catherine said smoothly as her lead legal counsel answered on the first ring.

“I’m here, Catherine. I just got the firewall alert,” Marcus’s voice came through crisp and ready. “The honeypot was triggered from an IP address registered under a shell corporation linked to Julian Vance and Bella Langford.”

“They took the bait completely,” Catherine said, her tone icy and composed. “They think they’ve found the smoking gun to destroy the foundation.”

“Shall I notify the federal prosecutor’s office and file an immediate civil suit for corporate espionage, computer fraud, and extortion?” Marcus asked.

Let them take it to the press, or present it to a compromised regulatory board. Let’s watch them step right off the edge of the cliff before we pull the rope.”

“Understood, Catherine,” Marcus chuckled softly on the other end of the line. “I’ll have the digital forensic chain-of-custody locked down and certified by federal cyber experts by morning.”
