Chapter 24 - The Shadow of Julian VanceWhile Catherine was in Zurich cementing her international legal victory, back in Miami, corporate sharks were circling the remnants of the local investment scene.

Julian Vance, the ruthless venture capitalist who had briefly swooped in to court Bella Langford on the day of the family barbecue, sat behind a sleek glass desk in his Brickell Avenue penthouse. He stared at his laptop screen, watching the rapid devaluation of any remaining commercial assets tied to the Ashford name.
Julian had built his entire career on scavenging distressed properties and buying up bankrupt corporate shells for pennies on the dollar. When Owen Ashford fell, Julian had thought he could pick the bones clean.
Instead, every single acquisition he attempted in Palm Beach and Miami was systematically blocked, outbid, or legally neutralized by the Vale Foundation.
The intercom on his desk buzzed sharply.
“Mr. Vance?” his executive assistant’s voice crackled through. “You have a visitor in the lobby. She insists on seeing you immediately. She says it’s regarding Catherine Vale Ashford.”
Julian frowned. “Send her up.”
Two minutes later, the office doors swung open. Standing in the doorway was Bella Langford.
She looked a far cry from the glittering, confident twenty-four-year-old who had worn a white sundress to the family barbecue two years ago. Her designer clothes were last season’s styles, her makeup was heavy to hide exhaustion, and her eyes held a desperate, calculating edge.
“Julian,” Bella said, offering a tight, artificial smile as she walked uninvited into the office and sat down in front of his desk. “It’s been a while.”
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms, his expression cold and unimpressed. “Bella. I thought you moved to New York after your tech startup investments went belly-up.”
“I tried,” Bella admitted, her voice dropping its usual bubbly pretense. “Things didn't work out. But I know something that can help you get back at Catherine Vale Ashford. I know how the Vale Foundation structures its private medical grants. And more importantly, I know the private security codes to her personal estate archives.”

Julian stared at her for a long, silent moment. A slow, dangerous smile crept across his lips.
“Go on, Bella,” Julian murmured, leaning forward. “You’ve caught my attention.”
