Chapter 16 - Midnight at the GazeboThe iron gates of the Palm Beach estate stood slightly ajar under the pale glow of a crescent moon.

The sprawling oceanfront lawn was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, crashing roar of the Atlantic waves against the seawall. The grand mansion behind the lawn loomed like a sleeping giant, its pediatric recovery center windows dark and peaceful.
Patricia Ashford walked slowly down the stone pathway, her footsteps echoing sharply against the pavement. She wore a heavy black cashmere coat to ward off the midnight ocean breeze, and beneath her arm, she clutched the weathered wooden box containing the archive files that she believed would restore her family’s dynasty.
As she reached the white wooden gazebo overlooking the silver-blue water, she saw a single figure standing inside, illuminated by a soft overhead lantern.
Catherine Vale Ashford.
Catherine wore a tailored black coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail. She stood with her hands resting calmly in her pockets, staring out at the ocean just as she had done on the day of the fatal family barbecue.
“You’re punctual, Patricia,” Catherine said softly without turning around.
Patricia stepped up onto the wooden deck of the gazebo, slamming the wooden box down onto the white table with a heavy, echoing thud.
“Spare me the pleasantries, Catherine,” Patricia sneered, her voice dripping with venom. “You realized you couldn't beat the bloodline. Now, sign the transfer papers, hand over the digital keys to the foundation, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you walk away from this without a federal indictment for your father’s legacy.”
Catherine slowly turned around. There was no fear on her face. Instead, a calm, pitying smile played across her lips.
“You really think you outsmarted me, don't you, Patricia?” Catherine asked softly, stepping closer.
“I hold the cards that destroy your entire life,” Patricia snapped, reaching out to pop the brass clasp of the box. “Open the deed transfers and sign them right now!”
“Open it,” Catherine encouraged smoothly. “Go ahead.”
With trembling, eager fingers, Patricia flipped open the wooden lid.
There were no documents inside. No Cayman Island bank records. No judicial slush-fund receipts.
Inside the box sat a single, blinking digital recording device, its tiny red LED light pulsing steadily in the dark, alongside an official federal warrant bearing a high-ranking judge's signature.
Patricia froze. Blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse in the moonlight. “What... what is this?”

“This is a recording of your voice, Patricia, explicitly detailing your extortion demands and your illegal tampering with sealed federal bankruptcy files,” a cool, authoritative male voice boomed from the shadows behind the gazebo.
Step by step, three figures emerged from the surrounding sea grapes: Marcus Vance, followed by two federal marshals in dark tactical gear with their badges gleaming under the moonlight.
