Chapter 8 - The Queen’s GambitTwo months later, the corporate restructuring of Ashford Holdings was complete—though it was no longer an Ashford enterprise.

At a packed press conference in downtown Miami, flashing cameras illuminated a sleek, modern podium where a corporate restructuring announcement was being broadcast live across every major financial network.

Arthur Ashford, Julian Vance, and the remaining disgraced board members sat in the front row of the auditorium, their faces pale and tense. They were no longer decision-makers; they were invited spectators watching their family legacy get completely rebranded.

Steping up to the microphone was not a corporate liquidator or a male executive, but Catherine Vale Ashford.

She wore a sharp, tailored ivory suit—a deliberate departure from the navy dress she had worn on the day of the family barbecue. Her posture was immaculate, her gaze steady and unyielding as she looked out over the sea of reporters.

“Good morning,” Catherine began, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with absolute authority. “Effective today, Ashford Holdings is officially dissolving its legacy corporate structure. All remaining assets, real estate holdings, and intellectual properties are being absorbed into the Vale Medical & Technology Foundation.”

A collective gasp echoed through the auditorium. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm of light.

In the front row, Arthur Ashford clutched his chest, while several former board members started frantically typing on their phones. By absorbing the company into her family’s medical foundation, Catherine had permanently locked out any future claims from the Ashford bloodline. The family trust was officially dead.

“Furthermore,” Catherine continued, her voice cutting through the rising murmurs of the press, “we are launching a specialized compliance and forensic audit division dedicated to exposing corporate fraud and executive malfeasance—starting with a full public disclosure of illicit shell companies operated by former executives over the last five years.”

Across the country, in a federal holding facility in Tallahassee, Owen Ashford stared at a small, mounted television screen in the common room.

He watched his ex-wife command the stage, looking radiant, powerful, and completely untouchable. He was wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed, waiting for his preliminary bail hearing. His mother had cut him off entirely, retreating to a small apartment in Boca Raton, while Bella Langford had already blocked his number after her new relationship with Julian Vance hit the gossip columns.

Owen closed his eyes, finally realizing the sheer magnitude of his mistake. He hadn't just lost a wife; he had signed away his entire existence.
