Chapter 10 - The Horizon of a New DawnTwo weeks after the sentencing, the sun rose over Wrightsville Beach, casting a brilliant, golden sheen across the Atlantic Ocean.

The air smelled of salt, pine, and absolute freedom.
Jessica stood on the wrap-around wooden deck of a sprawling, sun-bleached coastal house overlooking the ocean—the Wilmington property her father-in-law had unlocked for her.
She wore a simple linen dress, her bare feet propped up against the railing. In her hand was a ceramic coffee mug with a chipped blue rim.
She had brought it with her from Charlotte. Not out of sentimentality for the past, but as a reminder of the exact moment her real life had begun.

She glanced down at the screen. It was an email notification from the state bar association confirming that her application to enroll in law school had been officially approved.
She had spent a decade playing the supporting character in someone else’s selfish story. Now, she was writing her own script, sentence by sentence, page by page.
Victor had laughed into that speakerphone months ago, foolishly believing he knew how her story ended.
He had been right about one thing, though.
She had stayed.

She had stayed long enough to dismantle his entire world, brick by brick, and build a fortress of her own.
Jessica smiled out at the ocean, the wind lifting her hair, and whispered to the empty, beautiful air:
