Chapter 21 - The Scales of Justice

The lecture hall at the University of North Carolina School of Law was quiet enough to hear the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. Professor Harrison, a notoriously rigorous constitutional law professor known for grilling students until they stammered, stood at the podium with a stack of mid-term examinations in his hand.

“Before we transition to our segment on property rights and civil restitution,” Professor Harrison announced, his sharp gaze scanning the amphitheater, “I want to highlight an exceptional brief submitted by a second-year student. A detailed, flawless dismantling of asset concealment frameworks under interstate federal jurisdiction.”

He paused, looking directly toward the center row.

“Ms. Jessica Carter. Your analysis of structural fraud loops was published in the quarterly law review yesterday. Exceptional work.”

A subtle ripple of murmurs and appreciative nods spread across the room. Two years prior, Jessica had barely spoken above a whisper in a kitchen where her voice was dismissed. Now, her legal mind was commanding the respect of top-tier legal scholars.

Jessica offered a polite, professional nod of acknowledgment. Her pen rested steadily between her fingers. She didn’t feel a sudden rush of vanity or pride; she felt the quiet, steady alignment of a person standing exactly where she was meant to be. Every precedent she cited, every statute she analyzed, carried the weight of someone who had lived through the loopholes and survived to rewrite them.
