Chapter 25 - The Wilmington GalaThe annual Coastal Heritage Charity Gala was held under a sprawling white tent erected on the pristine lawns overlooking Wrightsville Beach. Strings of warm fairy lights reflected off the dark ocean waves, and soft jazz music floated through the warm autumn air.

Jessica attended as one of the keynote guest speakers, recognized for her groundbreaking work with financial fraud survivors in eastern North Carolina.

She wore a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown that caught the candlelight, her dark hair swept back in an elegant, sophisticated twist.

Marcus stood beside her, looking sharp in a tailored black tuxedo, holding two glasses of sparkling cider.

“You know, Counselor,” Marcus murmured with a playful grin as they watched the crowd mingle beneath the tent, “every time I see you up at a podium destroying corrupt corporate executives with cross-examinations, I fall in love with you all over again.”

Jessica turned, her dark eyes sparkling with amusement and deep affection. “Is that so? Or are you just trying to butter me up so I don't audit your personal expense reports?”

Marcus laughed, stepping closer and wrapping an arm gently around her waist. “My expense reports are an open book. Just like my heart.”

Before Jessica could reply, the event coordinator tapped gently on her microphone, signaling that it was time for her speech.

She took a final sip of her drink, handed her glass to Marcus, and walked smoothly up the steps to the stage.

As she looked out over the sea of attentive faces—local leaders, judges, advocates, and survivors—she didn't think about the past, the broken plates, or the lonely kitchens of her old life. She thought only of the present, and of the incredible future they were continuing to build.
