Chapter 13 - The First Day of the Rest of Her LifeBack in Wilmington, the morning sun was climbing high into a cloudless blue sky.

Jessica walked down the wooden steps of the deck onto the white sandy beach, her bare feet sinking slightly into the warm, damp sand. She wore a simple white linen sundress, her dark hair blowing gently in the ocean breeze.

In her hand, she held the chipped blue-rimmed ceramic plate her mother had given her years ago.

She walked down to the water’s edge, where the foaming white waves crashed rhythmically against the shore.

For nearly a decade, she had carried the invisible weight of a marriage built on lies, shrinking herself to fit into the small, controlled box Victor had carved out for her. She had endured the gaslighting, the emotional neglect, and the suffocating pressure of trying to keep a crumbling facade together while managing her mother’s illness.

She raised the blue-rimmed plate.

With a smooth, powerful swing of her arm, she hurled it out over the cresting waves.

She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel sadness. She felt an overwhelming, weightless sense of absolute freedom. The past was gone, washed away by the tide.
