Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of the Tide

The salt breeze of Wrightsville Beach tasted like victory.
Two weeks after the gavel came down in the federal courtroom, Jessica Carter stood on the wide mahogany deck of the Wilmington waterfront estate. The house was a masterpiece of coastal architecture—wraparound porches, floor-to-ceiling glass windows that framed the endless expanse of the Atlantic, and weathered cedar siding that smelled faintly of pine and sea mist.
Inside, the movers were placing the final boxes of her mother’s belongings into the master suite on the ground floor, ensuring her mother would have easy access to the garden paths.
Jessica’s phone buzzed against the patio table.
She picked it up, expecting a message from Evelyn Vance regarding the final closure of the corporate accounts. Instead, it was an alert from an unknown, encrypted email address.
Frowning, Jessica swiped to open it.
Attached was a scanned document dated eight years ago—a document that Victor had gone to extreme lengths to bury. It was an insurance policy and a private trust fund set up by Victor’s maternal grandfather, worth nearly one point five million dollars, listing Victor as the sole beneficiary contingent upon remaining legally married and maintaining a clean financial record.
Because of his felony conviction, his federal embezzlement, and the uncontested divorce decree, the trust had automatically triggered a default clause.

The entire one point five million dollars reverted immediately to the legal spouse of the beneficiary.
Jessica stared at the screen, a slow, breathless laugh escaping her lips. Victor hadn't just lost his freedom, his career, and his condo; in his blind arrogance and greed, he had actively signed away the very generational wealth he had spent a decade scheming to control.
