Chapter 24 - A Blast from the PastBack in Charlotte, the world had continued to spin without Victor Whitmore. The suburban house where his lies had first unraveled had long since been sold to a young family.

Inside the federal correctional facility, the years were aging Victor poorly. The gray in his hair had spread aggressively, and the arrogance that once defined his posture had been replaced by a permanent, haunted hunch.

During a rare recreation hour in the concrete yard, a guard approached him with a clipboard.

“Whitmore. Legal mail delivery.”

Victor dragged his feet toward the guard station, signing his name with a blunt plastic pen. He took the thin manila envelope back to his bench, tearing it open with trembling fingers.

It wasn't a court motion. It was a local Charlotte newspaper clipping sent by an old acquaintance who enjoyed twisting the knife.

The headline caught his eye immediately:

NEW HANOVER LEGAL AID CLINIC EXPANDS; ATTORNEY JESSICA CARTER APPOINTED LEAD COUNSEL FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD RECOVERY.

Beneath the headline was a photograph. Jessica stood on the courthouse steps in Wilmington, wearing a crisp navy suit, looking fiercely intelligent, radiant, and utterly unstoppable.

Victor stared at the image until the prison yard walls seemed to blur into nothingness.

He remembered laughing into a speakerphone on a rainy Thursday night, telling his drinking buddies that she would cry, scream, forgive him, and stay because she was weak.

Instead, she had taken his deception, forged it in the fire of her own resilience, and built a career dedicated to destroying men exactly like him.

He dropped the clipping onto the dusty concrete. A sudden gust of wind caught it, blowing it away across the yard, leaving him completely alone with the wreckage of his own design.
