Chapter 18 - Echoes Across the MilesFar away, inside the bleak, gray confines of the federal prison yard, the afternoon sunlight struggled to penetrate the high chain-link fences topped with razor wire.

Victor Whitmore sat alone on a concrete bench, staring blankly at the ground.
A fellow inmate tossed a crumpled newspaper onto the table beside him.
“Hey, Whitmore isn't that your rich ex-wife? Front page of the legal journal down in Wilmington.”
Victor slowly raised his head. His eyes drifted to the newspaper clipping.
There she was.
Elegantly dressed in a tailored navy blazer, her dark hair shining in the sunlight, smiling with an expression of profound, unshakeable confidence as she spoke outside the courthouse. The caption beneath the photo read: ‘Jessica Carter: Leading the Charge for Financial Fraud Survivors.’
Victor stared at the image until the ink blurred before his eyes.
He remembered the night he stood in his kitchen, laughing into a speakerphone, telling his buddies that she would cry, scream, forgive him, and stay because she needed him.

She hadn't needed him at all. She had simply been waiting for the right moment to burn down his entire house of lies and build an empire of her own.
