Chapter 15 - THE RETREATEvelyn stood up so fast her chair screeched against the polished floor.

"This isn't over, Grayson," she hissed through clenched teeth, gathering her papers with shaking hands. "You can't control everything forever."

"Try me," Grayson replied quietly.

Without another word, Evelyn turned and practically fled the boardroom, the heavy glass doors slamming shut behind her.

The remaining board members let out a collective breath. The lead investor cleared his throat, adjusting his tie. "Well... it appears Mr. Maddox’s leadership remains... exceptionally secure."

"Meeting adjourned," Grayson said coldly.

As the board members quickly filed out of the room, leaving Grayson and Amelia alone in the vast silence, Grayson exhaled a deep, shaky breath he didn't realize he’d been holding. He stood up and walked around the table, stopping inches from Amelia.

"You didn't have to come here," Grayson murmured, his voice softening completely as he looked down at her. "It was dangerous."

"You think I'm going to let some corporate vulture ruin what we just built?" Amelia raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk touching her lips. "Besides, I still have access to your old firm's financial loopholes. Who do you think taught you how to spot a fraudulent trust fund in the first place?"

Grayson let out a genuine, low laugh—the kind of laugh he hadn't emitted in years. He reached out, gently wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close against his chest.

"You saved my empire," he whispered against her hair.

"No, Grayson," she whispered back, resting her hands against his lapels. "We saved our family."
