Chapter 8 - THE MIDNIGHT TRUTH IN THE NURSERYThe nursery was small, painted a soft, calming shade of lavender that smelled faintly of chamomile and baby powder. It bore no resemblance to the cold, neutral tones of Grayson’s Manhattan penthouse. Here, every surface told a story of love, resourcefulness, and fierce maternal devotion.

Grayson stood in the doorway, his broad shoulders seeming to fill the tiny room. His breath hitched as he looked down at the wooden crib in the corner.
Chloe was fast asleep, her tiny chest rising and falling in steady, rhythmic beats. A faint tuft of dark hair curled against her forehead, and one small hand was tucked snugly beneath her cheek.
"She has your mother's nose," Amelia whispered softly, standing just behind him, her shoulder brushing against his arm.
"She has your spirit," Grayson replied, his voice barely audible. He took a slow, reverent step forward, kneeling beside the crib as if approaching an altar. He didn't dare touch her, terrified that his large, calloused hands might break something so fragile and pure. "Amelia... I am so sorry."
The words didn't sound rehearsed. They carried the heavy, crushing weight of eighteen months of silent regret.
Amelia leaned against the doorframe, her arms crossed defensively over her chest, though her eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Saying sorry doesn't bring back the months you weren't here, Grayson. It doesn't change the nights I sat in this room wondering how I was going to raise a child alone while building a life from scratch."
"I know," he said, turning his head to look up at her, his gray eyes shining with unshielded vulnerability. "I don't expect you to forgive me. Not today. Maybe not ever. But I am not walking away. I’m setting up a trust, a permanent legal framework—whatever you want. I want to be her father. Not just on paper. Every single day."
Amelia looked down at him, seeing beneath the billion-dollar tailored suit and the corporate armor for the first time in their marriage. She saw the lonely boy who had worked seventy-hour weeks just to prove he was worthy of love.
"You have to prove it, Grayson," she whispered fiercely. "Not to a judge. Not to the tabloids. To me."
Before Grayson could answer, a sharp, urgent vibration shattered the quiet peace of the nursery.
Amelia grabbed her phone from her pocket. The screen flashed with an incoming call from Marcus Chen, marked with an emergency red banner.
She swiped to answer, hitting speakerphone. "Marcus? What is it? It's the middle of the night."
Marcus's voice came through breathless, panicked, and entirely distorted by static. "Amelia—Thank God you answered. Listen to me very carefully. Jonathan didn't just send a photographer to your apartment."
Grayson stood up instantly, his instincts flaring. "What are you talking about, Marcus?"
May you like
"He filed an anonymous complaint with Child Protective Services," Marcus blurted out, the words tumbling over each other. "They have an emergency warrant based on fabricated neglect claims. They're heading to your apartment right now, Grayson. They're going to use the tabloid photos to strip custody from both of you tonight!"
Hook: Before the warning can even settle, heavy, aggressive pounding echoes against the front door downstairs—Child Protective Services has arrived.
