Chapter 7 - THE FLASHBULB BETRAYALThe blinding white flash cut through the dark Brooklyn alley like lightning.

Grayson whipped his head around, his predatory instincts flaring instantly. "Hey!" he roared, sprinting away from the brownstone toward the shadows.
But by the time he reached the mouth of the alley, it was empty. Only the distant hum of a motorcycle speeding away down the avenue echoed through the wet night air.
At the window, Amelia pulled back sharply, pressing a hand to her mouth. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
"Grayson..." she called out softly as he walked slowly back beneath the streetlamp, his face dark with suppressed fury.
"It was a private investigator," Grayson said, his voice dangerously low. "Jonathan’s dirty work. Tomorrow morning, every tabloid in New York is going to run a story about the billionaire stalking his ex-wife in Brooklyn, painting me as unstable and unfit for custody."
Amelia pushed open the front door of the brownstone, wrapping a heavy wool cardigan tightly over her pajamas. She stepped out onto the porch steps, looking up and down the empty street.
"If the tabloids run that story, Victoria will use it to demand emergency psychological evaluations," Amelia whispered, panic creeping into her voice for the first time. "They'll try to lock you out of the corporate vote by Monday."
Grayson stepped up onto the porch, closing the distance between them. For the first time in eighteen months, they were standing close enough to feel the heat radiating off each other.
"They can try," Grayson said, his voice steady, though his jaw was clenched so hard it looked like it might fracture. "But Jonathan just made a fatal mistake."
"What mistake?"
"He thinks I’m distracted by the family drama," Grayson murmured, reaching out slowly—hesitating a fraction of a second before his fingertips gently brushed a stray lock of hair away from Amelia’s forehead. She didn't pull away. "He doesn't realize that everything I’ve done this past week—every asset I liquidated, every account I froze—wasn't just to prepare for a custody battle."
Amelia looked up into his gray eyes, suddenly realizing the terrifying scope of his mind. "What did you do, Grayson?"
"I bought his primary debt," Grayson said softly, a cold, ruthless smile touching the corners of his lips. "Jonathan leveraged his entire personal portfolio to fund my legal opposition. As of six o'clock this evening, Maddox Development holds his notes. If he prints that story tomorrow, I will foreclose on his personal estate by noon on Monday."
Amelia stared at him, a shiver running down her spine. He wasn't just a man fighting for his child; he was an apex predator holding a loaded gun to his enemy's head.
"You're terrifying," she whispered, though there was no malice in her voice—only a strange, complicated awe.
"Only to people who try to take my family," Grayson replied, his gaze dropping briefly to the warm light spilling from the doorway behind her. Then, softer: "Can I... can I see her?"
May you like
Amelia stood frozen for a long moment, the silence stretching between them like a fragile bridge over an abyss. Finally, she stepped aside, opening the door wider.
