Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE UNLOCKEDWord travels fast among the ultra-wealthy, and by the time Grayson and Amelia moved out of the chapel’s main hall into the sprawling courtyard, the whispers had already weaponized themselves.

Standing near the fountain was Jonathan Vance—Grayson’s primary business rival and a man who lived to see Grayson stumble. Vance swirled his champagne, a predatory smile plastered across his face as he watched Grayson corner Amelia near the ivy-covered stone wall.
Grayson didn't care about Vance. He didn't care about the gossip columns that would inevitably run tomorrow morning with headlines reading Billionaire’s Secret Child Drops at Society Wedding.
He only cared about the small hand of the baby girl, which had accidentally reached out and caught the fabric of his custom-tailored suit jacket.
"Amelia, listen to me," Grayson pleaded, his voice dropping to a raw, desperate whisper. "I know I failed you. I know I was a monster. But you can't just keep my child from me."
"Your child?" Amelia’s eyes flashed with a dangerous fire. "Where was this fierce paternal instinct when I spent the first trimester throwing up alone in a tiny rented apartment while you were ringing the bell at the stock exchange? Where were you when I went into labor with no emergency contact listed because I had already erased your name from my life?"
The words struck Grayson like physical blows. He staggered back a half-step, his vision blurring. "You went through labor alone?"
"Entirely alone," she whispered, her voice trembling now, the wall finally cracking to reveal the profound trauma underneath. "And do you know what the worst part was, Grayson? The worst part was that when she was born, she had your eyes. Every time I looked at her, I saw the man who looked at me like I was just another asset on his balance sheet."
The baby, sensing her mother's distress, let out a soft cry and buried her face into Amelia's neck.
Grayson felt a tear slip down his cheek—the first time he had cried since his mother's funeral a decade ago. "Let me fix it," he choked out. "Give me a chance. I have money, lawyers, resources—"
"Keep your money," Amelia interrupted, her voice hardening instantly. "Keep your lawyers. Because if you try to use your billions to take my daughter away from me, I will wage a war that will strip you of every last brick in your precious empire. You think you're ruthless, Grayson? Try fighting a mother protecting her cub."
Before he could answer, a sleek black town car pulled up to the venue's private exit. Marcus Chen slipped out from the back, opening the door for Amelia.
Marcus threw Grayson an apologetic, sorrowful look. "I’m sorry, Gray. She called me for a ride out of here before things got worse."

Amelia shifted the baby, turned her back on the frozen billionaire, and slid into the vehicle. The door clicked shut with a heavy, final thud, sealing Grayson’s fate as the car melted away into the Manhattan traffic.
