Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM BLEEDINGMonday morning at Maddox Development Corporation usually started with precision. Financial analysts presented quarterly yields, project managers reported on steel shipments, and Grayson sat at the head of a mahogany table, emotionless and infallible.

Today was different.

The quarterly projections for the Midtown Commercial Tower were displayed on the smart-screen, but Grayson hadn't blinked in ten minutes. His eyes were bloodshot, bruised from a sleepless night spent staring at old photographs of Amelia smiling in a kitchen that had since become a cold museum.

"Mr. Maddox?"

The lead project manager paused, clearing his throat nervously. "Sir? Are we moving forward with the acquisitions in Chelsea?"

Grayson didn't answer. He stood up so abruptly his leather chair slammed backward against the glass wall. The entire executive board fell into a dead, terrified silence.

"Cancel it," Grayson said, his voice flat, dead, and terrifyingly cold.

"Cancel... sir? The Chelsea acquisition has been three years in the making. If we pull out now, we lose—"

"I don't give a damn what we lose," Grayson snarled, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. The coffee cups rattled. "Put every single acquisition on hold. Liquidate our short-term liquid assets. I want a complete forensic audit of every legal firm specializing in family law, child custody rights, and high-net-worth litigations in the tri-state area. By noon."

The general counsel, a veteran lawyer named Harold, swallowed hard. "Gray... what is happening? Are you facing a hostile takeover?"

"Worse," Grayson muttered, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows to stare out at the gray New York skyline. "I’m facing a war."

By 1:00 PM, Grayson’s private office looked like a war room. Documents were scattered across the floor. Piles of case files regarding paternal rights, interstate relocation laws, and emergency custody injunctions littered his desk.

His lead attorney, a bulldog named Victoria Vance (no relation to Jonathan), adjusted her glasses and looked up from a thick folder.

"Mr. Maddox, let’s be entirely realistic," Victoria said smoothly. "If Mrs. Maddox filed for sole custody and successfully hid the pregnancy, she has a very strong initial footing. However, since you are the biological father and your name is tied to immense financial resources, we can file an emergency petition to establish paternity and demand joint custody. But I must warn you—it will get ugly. It will hit Page Six. Your stock will take a hit."

Grayson turned slowly from the window. The vulnerability from the wedding was gone, replaced by the terrifying, cold intelligence that had built his billion-dollar empire from scratch.

"Let the stock drop," Grayson whispered softly. "Let Page Six print whatever they want. I want a court order on her doorstep by tomorrow morning establishing mandatory DNA testing and temporary visitation rights."

Victoria paused, raising an eyebrow. "Are you entirely sure, Grayson? Once you pull that trigger, there is no going back to a peaceful resolution. You are declaring war on the mother of your child."

Grayson looked down at his desk, where a single photograph sat—not of a building, not of a skyscraper, but of a tiny pair of gray eyes staring up from a sage-green dress.

"War," Grayson said quietly, "is the only thing I’m good at."
