Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING IN THE AISLEThe ceremony felt like it lasted a century.

Grayson stood frozen, mechanically handing the ring to Marcus at the right cue, his mind racing through a chaotic maze of dates and mathematics. Eighteen months since the divorce. Eleven months since the baby was born.
He reverse-engineered the timeline with terrifying precision. They had separated in the dead of winter, but according to medical standards, this baby had been conceived... before the final papers were signed. Right around the time Grayson had told her he was too busy building his commercial tower to start a family. Right around the time he told her children would only complicate their lives.
When the officiant finally pronounced them husband and wife, the applause erupted like thunder. Grayson forced a polite smile for the congregation, but the moment the crowd rose to transition to the reception hall, he bolted.
He didn't care about protocol. He didn't care that hundred-million-dollar investors were watching him.
He strode down the aisle with a terrifying intensity, parting the crowd like a ship cutting through waves. Guests whispered, turning their heads to watch the ruthless real estate mogul lose his composure for the first time in public.
Amelia was already standing, trying to maneuver her diaper bag while holding the baby, who had begun to fuss softly.
"Amelia."
His voice cut through the ambient noise of congratulations and clinking champagne flutes.
She froze. For a single heartbeat, her defensive posture faltered. But when she turned to face him, her eyes were as cold and sharp as winter ice.
"Grayson," she said, her voice completely devoid of the warmth he remembered. "Congratulations to Marcus and Callie. A lovely ceremony."
"Don't do that," Grayson choked out, taking another step closer, entirely invading her personal space. His gaze dropped immediately to the baby. The little girl was staring up at him with wide, curious eyes. "Who is she?"
Amelia shifted the baby higher on her hip, stepping back. "She has a name, Grayson. Just like you used to have basic human decency. But both seem to have slipped your mind."
"Amelia, please." He reached out a trembling hand, hovering inches from the baby's tiny pink sweater, too terrified to actually touch her. "Is she... is she mine?"
"Why would you care?" Amelia's voice finally cracked, venom bleeding through her composed exterior. "You told me children were a distraction from your portfolio. You told me my desire for a family was holding back your career. So I packed my bags, left your golden cage, and gave you exactly what you wanted: a life completely free of complications."
"I was an idiot!" Grayson hissed, ignoring the turning heads around them. "I called you last week because I was drowning, Amelia! And you didn't think to mention this?"
May you like
"Mention that I was pregnant when you threw me out like a piece of expired furniture?" Amelia laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "Why? So you could buy her off? So you could set up a trust fund and pay a nanny to raise her while you stared at architectural blueprints? You don't get to play doting father now, Grayson. You traded your family for a skyscraper. Enjoy the view."
