Chapter 11 - The Golden Cage and the Emerald Ring

The heavy iron gates of the Blackwood estate closed with a dull, echoing thud, sealing off the outside world. Inside the master suite on the second floor, the air smelled faintly of cedarwood and expensive espresso.
Lily stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror, looking at her reflection with a sense of quiet disbelief. The emerald-green dress she wore hugged her waist, tailored perfectly by an anonymous Italian designer who had arrived at dawn with three discreet garment bags. On her left ring finger sat a heavy, vintage platinum band embedded with an emerald-cut diamond the size of a thumbnail—a family heirloom Victor had retrieved from the estate vault only an hour prior.
"It fits," a deep, smooth voice murmured from the doorway.
Lily turned to see Victor leaning against the doorframe. He had discarded his suit jacket, his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the faint, jagged scar across his left collarbone—a relic of a turf war from a decade ago.
"It’s breathtaking, Victor," Lily admitted softly, twisting the ring around her finger. "Almost too heavy. It feels like wearing a crown."
"You earned it," Victor said, crossing the room with slow, deliberate steps until he stood just inches away. He reached out, his warm thumb gently tracing her jawline. "The city is whispering. The tabloids are tearing themselves apart trying to figure out how a quiet, unassuming college graduate from Ohio suddenly became the most powerful woman in the Blackwood dynasty. Let them talk. They don't know the price you paid."
"What about Serena's allies?" Lily asked, her gaze steady. "The syndicates in New York and Milwaukee. They know the ledger drives are gone, but they won't just let billions in cartel money vanish."
Victor’s eyes hardened into obsidian glass, though his touch remained tender. "Let them try to reach us. Every single perimeter sensor has been upgraded to military-grade specs. Marcus has double our security detail at the gates. And as for me..." Victor dropped his voice to a low, dangerous purr, "...I have never been more motivated to keep my world secure."
Suddenly, the baby monitor on the mahogany nightstand crackled. A soft, sleepy gurgle echoed from the nursery down the hall.
Lily smiled, the tension melting from her shoulders. "Sounds like someone is waking up from his afternoon nap."

"Let's go check on our boy," Victor said, offering her his arm.
As they walked side by side down the carpeted hallway, the dark, suffocating shadows of the past seemed miles away. But deep in the underground sub-levels of the estate, behind three layers of reinforced titanium doors, a silent red light flickered on a terminal—a coded signal transmitting an encrypted, anonymous message out to the cold Chicago night. Someone was still listening.
