Chapter 18 - The Aftermath of the Storm

Twenty minutes later, the Swiss fortress was entirely secure. Thorne and his surviving mercenaries were zip-tied and loaded onto the tactical transport units waiting outside, bound for an undisclosed international black-site federal tribunal.
The grand glass hall was quiet again, save for the howling wind outside against the reinforced panes.
Victor stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the endless expanse of white peaks glittering under the moonlight. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind the heavy, profound weight of a man who had stared into the abyss and pulled his world back from the edge.
Footsteps approached softly across the stone floor.
Victor turned around.
Lily stood before him. Her tactical vest was unbuckled and hung loosely over her shoulders. Her hands were slightly bruised, and a small smudge of soot stained her cheek, but her dark eyes blazed with an unmatched, breathtaking fire.
Victor didn't say a word. He crossed the distance between them in two long strides, wrapped his massive arms around her, and pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her dark hair.
"You shouldn't have come," Victor whispered, his voice cracking slightly with an emotion he rarely allowed the world to see. "It was too dangerous. If you had died..."
"I couldn't stay behind, Victor," Lily interrupted softly, pulling back just enough to look up into his dark, intense eyes. "You taught me how to fight for what I love. And I love my life with you and Ethan too much to let anyone take it away."
Victor looked down at her, a profound, rare smile breaking across his hardened features—a smile filled with complete devotion, absolute respect, and endless love. He reached up, gently brushing the smudge of soot from her cheek with his thumb.
"When we get back to Chicago," Victor murmured, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register, "we are rewriting every rule in the book. You are never walking into a war zone alone again."

"Does that mean I get veto power over your security protocols?" Lily teased, a small, radiant smile touching her lips.
"Absolute veto power," Victor agreed, leaning down to press his lips gently against hers.
