Chapter 20 - The Forever Empire

The sun dipped low over the horizon of Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant golden glow across the grand ballroom of the Blackwood estate.

The guests had raised their crystal champagne flutes in a toast to the newlyweds. Marcus stood near the grand staircase, raising his glass with a rare, approving grin, while the private string quartet played a soft, timeless melody in the background.

Out on the private stone balcony overlooking the sprawling gardens, Lily leaned against the wrought-iron railing, breathing in the fresh evening air.

Victor stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder, pulling her back against his chest.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Blackwood," Victor murmured softly against her ear.

Lily smiled, looking down at the gardens where the security patrols moved quietly along the perimeter, keeping their world safe from the dark shadows of the city.

"I was just thinking about six months ago," Lily said softly, resting her hands over his. "When I walked through those front gates as a terrified nanny with no idea what my future held."

"And look at you now," Victor whispered, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him, his dark eyes shining with absolute devotion. "The heart of this house. The protector of my legacy. The only queen the Blackwood empire will ever bow to."

Lily wrapped her arms around his neck, looking up into the eyes of the man who had terrified the underworld yet loved her with every fiber of his being.

"We built this empire together," Lily whispered, a radiant smile touching her lips. "And nobody is ever going to break it."

Victor leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, tender kiss that sealed their past, their present, and every tomorrow waiting in the light.

And far beyond the iron gates, the city of Chicago slept in peace, knowing the shadows belonged to a family that would burn the world to protect each other.
