Chapter 17 - The Confrontation in the Glass Hall

Up in the grand glass hall, Victor stood motionless, his arms slightly away from his sides, surrounded by six armed mercenaries. Thorne stood smoothing down his cashmere sweater, breathing heavily after nearly being choked against the reinforced glass.

"You always were too impulsive, Victor," Thorne mocked, pacing back and forth across the polished stone floor. "You built an empire on fear, but you forgot the primary rule of survival: love is a fatal liability."

"Love isn't a liability, Julian," Victor said, his voice flat, steady, and utterly devoid of fear. "It’s the only thing worth bleeding for. You wouldn't understand. You died five years ago because you cared about nothing except your own reflection."

Thorne’s face darkened with sudden rage. He pulled a heavy 9mm pistol from his holster, stepping directly up to Victor and pressing the cold barrel hard against his temple.

"End of the line, Victor," Thorne snarled, his finger tightening around the trigger. "Say goodbye to your empire."

BANG.

The deafening roar of a gunshot echoed off the glass walls.

Thorne froze. His eyes widened in absolute shock as the pistol flew out of his hand, shattered instantly by a precision bullet that pierced the weapon's slide.

Before the mercenaries could pivot toward the sound, the heavy double doors at the far end of the grand hall blew open.

Standing in the threshold, framed by the swirling snow of the blizzard outside, was Lily. Her tactical vest was dusted with snow, her dark hair wet from the storm, and her Sig Sauer pistol held steady with a two-handed grip aimed squarely at the center of the nearest mercenary's chest.

"Drop your weapons!" Lily shouted, her voice echoing with an absolute, terrifying authority that commanded the entire room.

The mercenaries hesitated, thrown into total confusion by the unexpected arrival of an armed civilian in the middle of a high-security black-ops fortress.

It was all the opening Victor needed.

In a fraction of a second, Victor moved with terrifying, blinding speed. He swept his foot out, knocking the legs of the guard to his left, snatched the assault rifle from the falling man's hands, and pivoted, firing a devastating three-round burst that neutralized the remaining guards before they could even squeeze their triggers.

Thorne stumbled backward in sheer panic, grabbing a small silver remote off the obsidian desk. "You fools! You think you've won? This entire fortress is wired with seismic charges! If I don't punch the kill code, we all go down together!"

"You won't have the chance," a cold voice echoed from the doorway.

Marcus stepped into the hall, followed by a heavily armed tactical strike team that swarmed the room, subduing Thorne in a matter of seconds and slamming him face-first onto the stone floor.
