Chapter 15 - The Fortress of Glass and Stone

Inside Julian Thorne’s alpine stronghold, the air was dead, sterile, and freezing. Massive glass walls offered a panoramic view of the snowy abyss outside, while the interior was adorned with priceless stolen antiquities and modern tactical displays humming with high-definition security feeds.
Victor Blackwood stood unbound in the center of the grand hall. His hands were tucked casually into the pockets of his dark overcoat, his expression completely unreadable as he stared down the man sitting behind a massive obsidian desk.
Julian Thorne looked nothing like the decaying criminal the underworld whispered about. He was in his late fifties, impeccably groomed, wearing a tailored charcoal cashmere sweater. A thin, jagged scar ran from his right ear down to his collarbone—the exact souvenir Victor had given him in Marseille five years ago.
"Welcome, Victor," Thorne purred, swirling a glass of amber scotch. "I must admit, I didn't expect you to RSVP so quickly. I figured you'd be too busy playing domestic househusband with your little Ohio nanny."
Victor didn't flinch. His dark eyes locked onto Thorne with predatory focus. "You sent Serena to infiltrate my home, Julian. You used my son as leverage to steal my supply chains. You made a tactical error."
Thorne let out a cold, amused chuckle, setting his glass down on the desk with a sharp clink. He pressed a button on his console, and three massive high-definition screens mounted on the stone wall flickered to life.
The screens displayed live security footage from the perimeter of the fortress.
On screen one, Marcus and his tactical team were pinned down by heavy machine-gun fire near the outer ravine. On screen two, the security gates were locked tight under automated lockdown protocols. And on screen three—showing the private landing strip two miles down the mountain—a lone figure in a black tactical vest was stealthily navigating the perimeter fence line, dodging searchlights with fierce determination.
Victor’s gaze locked onto screen three. His chest tightened painfully.
Lily.
"Ah, yes," Thorne smiled cruelly, standing up from his desk and walking slowly toward Victor. "The brave little nanny couldn't stay behind, could she? Such a tragic loyalty. She flew all the way across the Atlantic just to die in the snow with you."
Victor’s calm exterior finally cracked, revealing the raw, unadulterated fury of a apex predator backed into a corner. Before Thorne could blink, Victor lunged forward across the desk, grabbing the older man by the collar and slamming him against the glass wall with bone-rattling force.
The glass cracked in a spiderweb pattern beneath Thorne’s weight.
"If so much as a hair on her head is harmed, Julian," Victor whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal, terrifying quietness, "I won't just kill you. I will dismantle your entire global network, brick by brick, and feed your remains to the wolves outside."
Thorne choked for air, coughing violently, yet a twisted, triumphant grin spread across his face. He didn't fight back. He merely raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

From the shadows behind the massive stone pillars, six heavily armed mercenaries stepped forward, their assault rifles raised and locked directly onto Victor’s chest.
"Checkmate, Victor," Thorne wheezed, adjusting his collar as Victor reluctantly loosened his grip. "Drop your weapon, or watch your beloved nanny get executed live on camera."
