Chapter 13 - The Golden Trap

Dawn broke over the Chicago skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of violet and orange.
Lily woke up to an empty bed. The space beside her was cold, the indentation of Victor’s pillow the only sign he had been there at all. She sat up quickly, throwing on a silk robe and walking down the hall to the nursery.
Ethan was awake, happily chewing on a teething ring in his crib while a private pediatric nurse adjusted his light fiberglass cast.
"Good morning, Miss Lily," the nurse smiled warmly. "Mr. Blackwood left instructions for you. He had to fly out on urgent corporate business in New York. He said he’ll be back by tomorrow evening."
Lily frowned, a sudden knot of anxiety tightening in her stomach. New York. Victor never left without telling her directly, without a lingering kiss or a whispered reassurance. Something was terribly wrong.
She walked down to the main office on the ground floor, bypassing the locked security doors using her new master biometric clearance. The room was pristine, but the private secure terminal in the corner had its screen left on standby mode.
Driven by an instinctive surge of dread, Lily stepped up to the terminal and tapped the spacebar.
The screen flickered to life, displaying an open satellite tracking window. A private jet—the Blackwood Gulfstream—was currently cutting across the Atlantic airspace, its destination set not for New York, but for Zurich, Switzerland. Below the flight path sat an active intelligence dossier labeled: THORNE, JULIAN. STATUS: ACTIVE THREAT.
Lily’s breath caught in her throat as she read through the encrypted incident logs. Serena wasn't just a bitter ex-fiancée; she was a pawn in a brutal international war. And Victor had flown straight into the lion's den alone to protect her and Ethan from a ghost who refused to stay dead.
Before Lily could process the sheer scale of the danger, the heavy oak doors of the study clicked open behind her.
Marcus stepped inside, looking surprised to see her standing at the terminal. He quickly closed the door behind him and locked it manually.
"You shouldn't be looking at that, Lily," Marcus said gently, his voice carrying a heavy, sorrowful weight.
"He went after Julian Thorne, didn't he?" Lily asked, her voice trembling slightly, though her eyes burned with fierce resolve. "He flew to Europe to face a man everyone thought was dead, and he didn't tell me because he knew I’d try to stop him."
Marcus sighed, running a hand over his stubbled jaw. "The boss operates by one rule: protect the bloodline at all costs. Thorne is a ghost, Lily. He operates in the shadows of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by a private army of ex-military mercenaries. If Victor walks into his stronghold without backup, it’s a suicide mission."

Lily stood tall, her shoulders squaring as the quiet, terrified nanny completely vanished, replaced by a woman forged in fire.
"Then we’re not going to let him die alone," Lily said. "Get the second jet ready, Marcus. We’re going to Switzerland."
