Chapter 4 - The Ripple Effect

By dawn, the news of Serena Montigue’s sudden disappearance had sent shockwaves through the elite circles of Chicago. High-society gossips whispered frantically over morning espresso at the Drake Hotel, wondering why the most anticipated wedding of the decade had been abruptly cancelled via a cold, three-sentence press release issued by Blackwood Enterprises.
Inside the Blackwood mansion, the atmosphere was a stark contrast of quiet recovery and mounting tension.
Ethan was sleeping soundly in his nursery, his small right arm encased in a lightweight fiberglass cast resting comfortably across his chest. Lily sat in the rocking chair beside the crib, softly humming a lullaby, her eyes heavy with exhaustion. The bruising across her stomach throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, but she refused to leave the room.
A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door.
Victor stepped inside. He had changed into a fresh charcoal suit, though the weariness in his sharp eyes remained unmistakable. He walked quietly across the nursery rug, stopping a few feet away from the crib to look down at his son.
"How is he?" Victor asked softly.
"He woke up around 4 AM crying from the pain medication wearing off," Lily replied, her voice gentle. "I gave him his drops and rocked him back to sleep. He’s been resting peacefully for the last two hours."
Victor nodded, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets. He looked at Lily, taking in the pale circles beneath her eyes and the faint discoloration visible at her collar where Serena’s heel had brushed her.
"You should be in bed, Lily," Victor said. "I brought in a private nurse from Northwestern Memorial to take over the day shift."
"I’m not leaving him," Lily said firmly, looking up to meet his gaze without a trace of intimidation. "Not today. Not until I know he feels safe here again."
Victor held her gaze for a long moment, a rare, faint shadow of a smile touching his lips. "Stubborn. I respect that. But you need to eat, and you need to see a proper doctor for those ribs."
"I'm fine, Mr. Blackwood."
"Victor," he corrected quietly. "After everything that happened last night, 'Mr. Blackwood' feels a bit formal, don't you think?"
Lily hesitated, then gave a small, tired nod. "Alright... Victor."
Before Victor could reply, the secure intercom on the nursery wall chimed sharply. Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and sharp.
"Boss, we have a complication down at the port. The Montigue family’s shipping vessels—the ones we seized control of this morning—they weren't just carrying legal cargo. Customs flagged three container units under Serena’s father's direct corporate seal. They're packed with unregistered tactical firearms and digital ledger drives belonging to the syndicate."
Victor’s face instantly hardened into stone. The fragile, domestic calm of the nursery vanished in a heartbeat, replaced by the lethal aura of the city's most feared mafia kingpin.
"Are the federal authorities involved yet?" Victor demanded into the intercom.
"Not yet," Marcus replied. "Our private sweep caught it before the dock inspectors saw the manifest. But Serena's father, Richard Montigue, is already screaming bloody murder on his private line, threatening to leak our logistics routing to the federal strike force if we don't return his assets within the hour."
Victor let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Richard thinks he still holds cards to play." He turned his dark eyes back to Lily, his expression softening just slightly before turning resolute. "I have to handle this. Can I trust you to lock down the nursery and not let anyone in until I return?"
"With my life," Lily said without hesitation.
May you like
Victor gave a sharp nod. "Lock the deadbolts from the inside. Don't open the door for anyone except me or Marcus."
With that, he turned and strode out of the room, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him. Lily stood up, walked to the door, and slowly turned the heavy brass deadbolt, her heart pounding as she realized that Serena’s cruelty was only the tip of a much deeper, more dangerous iceberg.
