Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Dark

Midnight descended upon the Blackwood estate like a shroud of heavy velvet. The sprawling mansion was entirely silent, save for the rhythmic, low-frequency hum of the air-filtration units and the occasional flash of distant lightning cutting across Lake Michigan.
In the master suite, Victor lay awake. His eyes were wide open, staring fixedly at the intricate plaster molding of the ceiling. Beside him, Lily slept soundly, one arm draped protectively over a spare pillow where little Ethan often crawled during bad weather.
Victor slipped out of bed with the silent, practiced grace of a predator. He pulled on a dark wool sweater, stepped into his loafers, and walked noiselessly down the private service stairs leading straight to the basement communications hub.
The sub-level command center glowed with the blue-green light of a dozen monitors. Marcus was already there, hunched over a steel desk with a cup of black coffee in hand.
"You're up early, boss," Marcus muttered without turning around, tapping a series of commands onto his mechanical keyboard.
"I didn't sleep," Victor replied, pulling out a metal chair and sitting down. "Something’s been sitting wrong in my head. Harrison Vance and Richard Montigue were ruthless, but they weren't masterminds. They were opportunists. Who was backing them financially from the shadows?"
Marcus hit a final enter key, bringing up a massive, complex network diagram that spanned across three separate screens.
"We traced the offshore routing from those ledger drives you recovered," Marcus said grimly, pointing to a blinking red node originating from Zurich, Switzerland. "The money didn't come from the local syndicates. It came through a blind shell corporation named Vanguard Holdings. And the primary beneficiary who authorized the capital injection to back Serena’s corporate takeover... wasn't a Montigue."
Victor leaned closer, his eyes narrowing. "Name."
"Julian Thorne."
The name dropped into the room like a lead weight. Victor’s posture went rigid. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees.
"Thorne," Victor repeated softly, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. "I thought he died in the Marseille harbor explosion five years ago."
"So did everyone else," Marcus replied, sliding a decrypted dossier across the desk. "Turns out he faked his death, moved his capital to Eastern Europe, and has been systematically buying up our distribution routes across the Midwest for the last eighteen months. Serena wasn't just his business partner—she was his niece."
Victor’s hands curled into tight fists on the steel desk, the knuckles turning white. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Serena hasn't just been a spoiled socialite dating a mafia boss for luxury; she had been a planted sleeper agent designed to infiltrate the Blackwood household, assassinate or displace the heir, and hand the entire Chicago empire over to Julian Thorne on a silver platter.
And Lily—sweet, courageous, observant Lily—had unwittingly ruined their entire multi-million-dollar coup by walking into the foyer at precisely the wrong moment.
"If Julian Thorne is back," Victor whispered, his voice dangerously low, "he’s not going to stop with financial games. He’s going to come for everything I love."
Marcus looked up, his face grim. "What do your orders say, boss?"

Victor stood up slowly, grabbing his leather gloves from the desk. A lethal, terrifying calm settled over his features.
"Prepare the Gulfstream," Victor commanded. "We’re going hunting in Europe."
