Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT PURSUIT

"Stop her!" Mr. Harrison roared, clutching his chest as panic overwhelmed his system. "Guard the doors! Don't let her leave!"

Security guards in black suits rushed from the perimeters of the hall, but Vanessa had already anticipated the move. She kicked off her high heels, grabbed a heavy brass candelabra from a display table, and smashed it against the glass French doors leading to the rear courtyard. Glass rained down like diamond dust as she scrambled out into the torrential rainstorm raging outside.

"Call an ambulance for my father!" Emily commanded the head butler, her gentle demeanor instantly shifting into that of a disciplined tactician. She didn't wait for the guards; she sprinted through the shattered doors, following Vanessa into the dark, rain-soaked gardens.

The rain was blinding, pounding against the manicured hedges of the Harrison estate. Mud caked Emily’s white dress as she tracked the manic sounds of footsteps splashing ahead.

"Vanessa!" Emily shouted over the thunder. "It’s over! The police are already on their way!"

From the shadows of the maze-like hedge garden, Vanessa emerged, clutching a heavy iron garden shears. Her hair was matted to her face, her eyes wild with a terrifying madness.

"You ruined everything, Emily!" Vanessa shrieked, swinging the iron blades wildly. "You were supposed to be the poor, pathetic orphan my father pitied! You were supposed to take the fall! He was going to change his will tonight! He was giving YOU the company!"

Emily ducked under a wild swing, sliding through the slick mud and coming up on her feet behind a stone fountain. "He was giving me the company because I earned it! Because I spent five years building the core software while you spent millions on European vacations!"

"It doesn't matter!" Vanessa yelled, tears mixing with the pouring rain. "The Harrison legacy belongs to ME! You think you're so smart with your little camera tricks? You don't even know who you really are, do you?"

Emily froze, her heart skipping a beat. "What are you talking about?"

Vanessa let out a chilling laugh that echoed off the stone walls. "You think my father took you in out of charity five years ago? You think it was a coincidence your parents died in that car crash the same week Harrison Corp acquired their tech patent?"

A crack of thunder illuminated the sky, casting harsh shadows across Vanessa’s twisted face.

"Your entire life is a lie, Emily," Vanessa hissed, taking a step closer. "My father didn't adopt you. He bought your silence."
