Chapter 6 - INTO THE ENEMY'S LAIR

Emily’s blood ran cold. She looked up at the black helicopter hovering above.

Armed men in tactical gear dropped down ropes, landing with lethal precision on the muddy cliffside. They didn't wear police badges. Their uniforms carried a single, terrifying symbol: a stylized silver cobra encircling an hourglass.

The lead operative stepped forward, raising his rifle. "Emily Vance. You're coming with us."

"Who are you?" Emily demanded, standing in front of the bleeding Vanessa.

The operative raised a hand, and two men stepped forward, roughly grabbing Emily’s arms and pinning her wrists with steel zip-ties. A third man knelt beside Vanessa, checking her pulse before looking up and shaking his head.

"She won't survive the flight," the soldier reported coldly.

"Leave her," the commander ordered. "She’s irrelevant now. Get the girl onto the chopper."

"No! Let me go!" Emily struggled against the unbreakable grip of the operatives as she was dragged toward the suspended harness. She looked down one last time at Vanessa, whose eyes slowly closed against the mud of the cliffside.

Minutes later, the helicopter tore through the storm clouds, flying fast and low over the dark ocean, leaving the Harrison Estate behind in a haze of burning fires and flashing police sirens.

Inside the cabin, Emily sat tied to a steel jump seat. Across from her sat a man in an immaculate gray suit, sipping scotch from a crystal tumbler despite the turbulence.

"Forgive the dramatic extraction, Miss Vance," the man said, his voice smooth and cultivated. "I am Julian Thorne. Chairman of the Vance-Harrison Global Syndicate."

Emily stared at him, her eyes burning with pure hatred. "You killed my parents."

"I eliminated a threat to global financial stability," Julian corrected smoothly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Your father was a genius, Emily. But he was an idealist. He wanted to release his quantum encryption to the public for free. Do you have any idea what happens to the world economy if privacy becomes absolute and uncontrollable?"

"It becomes free," Emily spat.

"It becomes chaos," Julian countered. "For fifteen years, we allowed old man Harrison to raise you, keeping you close so that when your father’s dormant code finally activated in your mind, we would be there to collect it."

Emily frowned, confusion cutting through her anger. "Activated in my mind? What are you talking about?"

Julian leaned forward, his dark eyes gleaming with a terrifying intensity. "You think your father put his final algorithm on a physical flash drive? Miss Vance... your father was a pioneer in neural-mapping. The drive you threw off that cliff was empty. The real code... is buried deep inside your own brain chemistry."
