Chapter 5 - THE PHANTOM SYNDICATE

Emily took half a step backward, her heels slipping over the loose pebbles falling into the roaring abyss below.

"Who are your employers?" Emily demanded, keeping her voice steady despite the sheer terror gripping her chest. "Who could possibly want an encryption algorithm that bad?"

Viktor smiled, a cold, soulless expression. "The people who actually run Harrison Corp from the shadows. Mr. Harrison was just a pathetic puppet with a fancy title. When your father created a code that could break every financial firewall in the world, he became too dangerous to live. Now, hand it over."

"Never," Emily said.

She didn't run. She didn't scream. With a single, decisive motion, Emily threw her arm backward and hurled the blue flash drive far out into the ocean, watching it vanish into the pitch-black waves below.

Viktor’s face twisted in rage. "You stupid little—"

Before he could pull the trigger, a blinding spotlight swept down from the clouds above. A massive black military helicopter hovered over the cliffside, its rotors creating a deafening gale that kicked up dirt and water.

Over the helicopter’s loudspeaker, a stern, authoritative voice boomed: "DROP YOUR WEAPON IMMEDIATELY! THIS IS THE FEDERAL TACTICAL TASK FORCE!"

Viktor cursed loudly, firing two wild shots toward the helicopter before spinning around and sprinting into the dense tree line of the estate grounds, abandoning the bleeding Vanessa on the mud.

Emily rushed over to Vanessa, kneeling beside her rival. Despite everything—the framing, the poison, the ruin of her life—Emily pressed her hands firmly against Vanessa’s bleeding wound to stop the hemorrhage.

Vanessa looked up at Emily through faded, tear-filled eyes, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "Why... why are you saving me? I tried to destroy you..."

"Because I'm not a monster like your father," Emily whispered bitterly. "And because I need you alive to testify against the people who did this."

Vanessa coughed, clutching Emily’s wet sleeve with surprisingly tight grip. "Emily... listen to me..." she wheezed, her voice dropping to a barely audible whisper. "The flash drive you threw away... it was a dummy, wasn't it?"

Emily remained silent, her face an unreadable mask.

Vanessa let out a wet, painful laugh. "You really are... his daughter. But you don't know the worst part... The man in that helicopter... isn't the police."
