Chapter 4 - THE CLIFFSIDE BETRAYAL

Viktor stepped into the open moonlight at the edge of the cliff, his weapon raised, with Vanessa cowering slightly behind him.
"Hand it over, girl," Viktor ordered smoothly. "And maybe I make it quick."
"Don't shoot her yet!" Vanessa demanded, stepping forward, her eyes fixated on the blue light of the flash drive. "I want to watch her jump. I want to see her realize that she lost!"
Emily stood inches from the edge of the crumbly dirt cliff. The wind whipped her wet hair across her face, but her eyes were fixed on Vanessa with absolute, unyielding calm.
"I didn't lose, Vanessa," Emily said softly. "You forgot one detail."
"What detail?" Vanessa spat.
"I didn't just stream the security video to the banquet hall," Emily revealed, a cold smile touching her lips. "I set up an automated cloud mirror. The moment I pressed that remote, every frame of that footage—including the audio recording of you giving Arthur the poison—was broadcast live to the State Prosecutor's office and five major news networks."
Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. "You... you didn't..."
At that exact moment, the night sky was pierced by the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of police cruisers tearing up the long driveway of the estate. The wail of sirens cut through the sound of the thunder.
"You bitch!" Vanessa shrieked. She grabbed the gun from Viktor’s hand in a fit of blind rage and pointed it straight at Emily’s chest.
BANG!
The gunshot echoed over the cliff. But it didn't come from Vanessa’s weapon.
Viktor had pulled a second, concealed pistol from his coat and fired point-blank into Vanessa’s side.
Vanessa gasped, dropping her gun as she fell to her knees, looking up at Viktor in complete shock. "Viktor... why...?"
Viktor didn't even look at her. He pulled off his earpiece and spoke into a hidden microphone. "Target double-crossed. The daughter is compromised. Proceeding with Phase Two."

He wasn't working for Mr. Harrison. He wasn't working for Vanessa.
Viktor turned his gun toward Emily. "Hand over the flash drive, Emily. My employers have been waiting fifteen years for your father’s quantum algorithms. Don't make me put a bullet in your head like I just did to her."
