Chapter 1 - The First Thread

Adrian Moretti stared at the black screen of his phone long after the call ended. The silence of the mansion felt heavier now, no longer the quiet of exhaustion, but the tense vacuum before a storm. In the adjacent room, he could hear the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Lily, still sleeping peacefully, unaware that her innocent observation had just redirected the violent destiny of an entire criminal empire.

Marko, his most trusted capo, arrived within twenty minutes. He didn’t use the front entrance; he slipped through the subterranean garage, moving with the silent efficiency of a ghost who had survived three decades of syndicate wars. When Marko stepped into the master bedroom, his eyes immediately tracked to Adrian’s face—and for the first time in three years, he didn't see the hollow, gray-skinned phantom who looked ready to collapse. He saw the cold, calculating apex predator who had built the Moretti name from blood and concrete.

“Boss,” Marko murmured, his hand resting instinctively near the heavy SIG Sauer tucked beneath his leather jacket. “The perimeter is secure. No one knows I’m here. What happened?”

Adrian didn't answer with words. He pointed a rigid finger toward the porcelain teacup sitting on the mahogany desk, its surface skimmed with a thin, iridescent film that had dried overnight.

“Take it,” Adrian said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that carried the weight of a death sentence. “Get it to Dr. Vance in the private lab off the docks. I want a complete chemical breakdown within the hour. No hospital registries, no paper trails.”

Marko stepped closer, lifting the cup by its handle with a gloved hand. He sniffed the rim, his weathered face darkening. “Dominic?”

“Dominic,” Adrian confirmed, the name tasting like ash on his tongue.

“The accounts, the shipping manifests, the board seats—he’s been positioning himself to absorb everything under the guise of nursing you through a mysterious illness,” Marko growled, his jaw tightening so hard the muscle ticked. “If this is slow-acting poison, it explains why your nervous system has been collapsing. He was starving your brain of sleep and coherence.”

“He wasn't trying to kill me, Marko,” Adrian said, stepping toward the window to watch the gray dawn break over the harbor. “Killing me would trigger a bloody succession war among the capos. Dominic is too cowardly for a direct coup. He wanted me incapacitated. He wanted me declared mentally unfit by a panel of his own bought-and-paid-for physicians, forced into a permanent ‘medical retirement’ while he quietly signed away the family’s assets.”

“And the child?” Marko asked, glancing toward the guest suite.

“Lily stays,” Adrian commanded, turning around with eyes burning with a terrifying clarity. “Double her mother’s salary. Move them both to the fortified estate on the north cliff by nightfall. If Dominic so much as looks in their direction, I want his teeth on the floor.”

Marko nodded once, pocketing the teacup in a sealed evidence bag. “I’m on it. What are your orders for your brother?”

“Play the invalid,” Adrian whispered, a chilling smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Let him think his medicine is still working. Let him walk right into the trap.”
