Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Shadows

Three weeks later, the Moretti empire was operating with terrifying efficiency. The internal rot had been thoroughly excised, and the regional capos, witnessing Adrian’s miraculous recovery and ruthless tactical precision, were more loyal than they had ever been.
In a sprawling, heavily fortified estate situated on a dramatic green cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the northern coast, peace had finally settled.
Adrian sat on the wraparound veranda, sipping a cup of steaming green tea—brewed personally by Elena under strict security protocols. His mind was razor-sharp, his hands steady, and for the first time in three years, he had slept seven unbroken hours every single night.
A soft pair of footsteps padded across the wooden deck.
Adrian looked down. Lily stood there, wearing a brand-new pair of yellow pajamas—this time covered in tiny giraffes instead of lions—and carrying a freshly washed, patched-up gray rabbit.
“Mr. Moretti,” Lily said, leaning against his knee.
Adrian smiled, a warmth in his eyes that no one in the underworld had ever witnessed. He reached down and lifted her up, setting her gently on his lap.
“Hello, Lily. Did you sleep well?”
“Yes,” she nodded, yawning. “My new room is big. And my rabbit likes the window.”
“I’m glad,” Adrian said softly, looking out toward the endless horizon where the sun was beginning to set in a brilliant blaze of orange and gold.
A discreet cough from the doorway signaled Marko’s arrival. The capo stepped onto the veranda, holding a secure encrypted tablet.
“Boss, the shipping manifests from the Singapore ports have cleared. And... we received an interesting transmission from South America an hour ago.”
Adrian didn't take his eyes off Lily, who was happily playing with the gold signet ring on his finger. “Go on.”
“Your brother made contact with local cartels in Medellín, trying to broker a small-time drug route to rebuild his status,” Marko reported, a grim smile touching his lips. “He didn't realize that territory belongs to the Ramirez cartel—the ones we cut a non-aggression pact with last year.”
“And?” Adrian asked calmly.
“They sent us a courtesy photo confirming he’s currently working in a limestone quarry. Indefinitely.”
Adrian gave a single, quiet nod. “Send them a crate of fine whiskey as a thank-you gesture.”
“Consider it done,” Marko replied, turning to leave.
Adrian looked back down at the little girl in his arms. The empire was secure, the traitors were gone, and the nightmare was finally over.
“Mr. Moretti?” Lily whispered, rubbing her eyes sleepily.
“Yes, Lily?”
“Are you going to stay awake tonight?”
May you like
Adrian smiled, resting his chin gently against her soft hair as the first evening stars began to pierce the twilight sky.
“No, little lion,” Adrian whispered softly, closing his eyes without a single trace of fear. “I think tonight, I’m finally going to sleep.”
