Chapter 20 - The Lion’s Rest

The sun began to dip below the western horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, fiery orange, and burning gold. The crashing waves against the rocky cliffs below sounded like a steady, rhythmic heartbeat, lulling the entire estate into a deep, peaceful evening.
On the wide stone veranda, Adrian sat in his favorite high-backed leather armchair, a warm woolen blanket draped loosely across his knees. The mansion behind him was quiet, bathed in the soft amber glow of wall sconces.
Lily walked out onto the veranda, her little footsteps pattering against the wooden boards. She was dressed in her cozy pajamas, her eyelids drooping with the heavy, natural fatigue of a three-year-old who had spent the entire day running, playing, and exploring.
She dragged her battered gray rabbit behind her by one ear, walking straight up to Adrian’s chair and resting her small hands against his knee.
"Mr. Moretti?" she whispered softly, yawning behind her hand.
Adrian smiled, bending down to lift her up into his arms and settling her securely against his chest. She rested her head against his shoulder immediately, her tiny fingers clutching the fabric of his shirt.
"Yes, little lion?" Adrian asked gently.
"Are you going to sleep now?" she mumbled, her eyes already fluttering closed.
Adrian looked out toward the dark, endless ocean, where the first bright stars of the night were beginning to pierce the twilight sky. The empire was secure. The traitors were gone. The poison was a distant memory, washed away by time and absolute loyalty.

He tightened his arms around the little girl who had saved him when no one else could, feeling the steady, peaceful rhythm of her breathing against his own heart.
"Yes, Lily," Adrian whispered into the quiet night air, closing his eyes without a single trace of fear or hesitation. "I think I am."
