Chapter 18 - The Dawn of a New Era

Three months later, the Moretti empire was stronger, leaner, and more secure than it had ever been in its history. The regional capos had unanimously ratified Adrian’s permanent supremacy, and the shadow of internal betrayal had been permanently purged from the syndicate’s ranks.
Far away from the violence and the concrete jungles of the East Coast, the northern cliffside estate stood bathed in the golden light of a crisp autumn morning.
Adrian sat on the wraparound veranda, his coffee cup steaming beside him. His mind was clear, his hands were steady, and his sleep had been deep, dreamless, and restorative every single night since that fateful midnight three months ago.
Footsteps approached from behind—soft, hurried, and accompanied by the unmistakable squeak of tiny shoes.
Adrian turned with a warm, genuine smile.
Lily ran out onto the veranda, wearing a brand-new pair of yellow pajamas covered in tiny pandas, carrying her battered, newly-patched gray rabbit under one arm.
"Mr. Moretti!" Lily called out happily, running straight toward his chair.
Adrian leaned down and scooped her up easily, setting her on his knee just as he had done on the very first night she changed his life.
"Good morning, little lion," Adrian said, his voice gentle and filled with an affection he had never known he was capable of feeling. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yes!" Lily beamed, holding up her rabbit. "Mr. Rabbit slept good too. Mama made pancakes!"
"Is that right?" Adrian chuckled, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "Tell your mother that pancakes are officially approved by the board of directors."
Elena walked out onto the veranda carrying a plate of fresh pastries, returning Adrian’s respectful nod with a warm, grateful smile. They had a permanent home here—safe, protected, and surrounded by an unbreakable wall of loyalty that no poison or betrayal could ever penetrate.
Adrian looked past them, out toward the endless expanse of the blue ocean where the horizon met the bright morning sky. The storm had passed. The shadows had retreated.
A soft knock echoed at the doorway, and Marko stepped out onto the deck, holding a simple, unsealed envelope.
"Morning, Boss," Marko said quietly, offering a respectful nod to Lily before handing the envelope to Adrian. "Final paperwork from the South American holdings has cleared. The Cartel del Sol has officially signed the non-aggression pact, and the quarry has been repurposed as a legitimate civil engineering logistics hub."
Adrian took the envelope, tossing it unopened onto the table. He didn't need to read the details anymore. The past was buried deep beneath the stone and the tide.
"Good work, Marko," Adrian said softly.
He looked back down at the little girl sitting on his lap, who was now busy showing her gray rabbit a passing seagull in the sky above.
"Mr. Moretti?" Lily asked, tilting her head up.
"Yes, Lily?"
"Are you ever going to stay awake all night again?"
May you like
Adrian smiled, resting his hand gently over hers as the morning sun warmed the veranda.
"Never again, little one," Adrian whispered, closing his eyes for a brief, peaceful moment just to feel the quiet joy of a well-earned rest. "Never again."
