Chapter 5 - Midnight at the Summit

The Grand Moretti Hotel’s top-floor boardroom was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic, glittering view of the city skyline, while the center of the room was dominated by a massive slab of black marble table surrounded by leather executive chairs.

By 11:55 p.m., all twelve regional capos were seated. The tension in the room was palpable. Whispers rippled through the air like static electricity.

“Is it true?” whispered Salvatore, the aging capo from the docklands, leaning toward his neighbor. “Is Adrian really losing his mind? After everything he built, to go out like a broken old man...”

“Dominic has the medical reports,” replied Vincente, the syndicate’s chief financial officer, tapping his fingers nervously on the marble. “And he has the power-of-attorney documents ready for signing. Whether we like it or not, the transition is happening tonight.”

At the head of the table sat Dominic Moretti. He wore an expression of grave, somber responsibility, occasionally dabbing his eyes with a silk handkerchief as if mourning the tragic decline of his older brother.

“Gentlemen,” Dominic began, his voice echoing across the silent room as the digital clock on the wall flipped to 12:00 a.m. “We all know why we’re here. My brother’s health has catastrophically failed. For three years, I’ve watched him suffer, tried to shield him from the pressures of this organization, but nature takes its toll. Tonight, for the survival of the Moretti family, we must ratify the leadership transfer.”

He slid a thick leather folder across the table toward the center seat.

“I have prepared the formal ratification papers. All that remains is his signature—which he has authorized me to execute on his behalf, given his current cognitive state.”

A heavy silence settled over the room. No one dared to object. Dominic’s coup seemed complete.

Then, the heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom slowly swung open.

A sharp draft swept into the room. Footsteps—crisp, deliberate, and entirely devoid of the frail shuffle Dominic had expected—echoed against the marble floor.

Every head snapped toward the entrance.

There stood Adrian Moretti.

His posture was immaculate. His eyes were clear, sharp, and blazing with a terrifying, predatory intensity. The tremor in his hands was entirely gone as he calmly unbuttoned his overcoat and handed it to Marko, who stood like a silent monolith at his shoulder.

Dominic’s face drained of all color. The pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the marble table.

“A-Adrian?” Dominic stammered, scrambling to his feet, his composure shattering in a single instant. “What... what are you doing here? You should be resting at the estate... the medication—”

“The medication wore off, little brother,” Adrian said, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. He walked slowly toward the head of the table, his gaze locked entirely on Dominic. “In fact, I’ve never felt more awake in my entire life.”
