Chapter 14 - The Cartel’s New Pawn

Two weeks after his escape from the quarry, Dominic Moretti looked less like a corporate titan and more like a hardened mercenary of the underworld. His hair was long and matted, his face etched with a thick, graying beard, and his body hardened by survival in the unforgiving wilderness. He had crossed the Venezuelan border on foot, navigating smuggling routes controlled by independent drug syndicates by trading high-value information regarding Moretti maritime channels.
Now, sitting in the dimly lit back room of a clandestine safe house in Caracas, Dominic faced a man who commanded absolute fear throughout the northern coast: Rafael "El Alacrán" Salazar, a high-ranking commander of the Cartel del Sol.
Salazar sat behind a scarred wooden table, casually spinning a heavy gold ring around his finger as he looked Dominic up and down with cold, calculating eyes.
"You walk out of a high-security limestone quarry owned by my biggest rivals in Colombia, you cross three mountain ranges on foot, and you show up at my door with a thumb drive containing active shipping manifests for the Moretti syndicate," Salazar said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "Either you are the luckiest ghost in South America, or you are a very clever operative working a double angle."
"I am neither," Dominic replied, his voice raspy and steady. He leaned forward, resting his scarred hands on the table. "I am a man who was betrayed by his own brother. Adrian Moretti locked me out, stole my life, and threw me to the wolves. I don't want your money, Salazar. I want resources. I want men, weapons, and a secure transport back into international waters."
Salazar raised an eyebrow, a cruel smile touching his lips. "And what do I get in return for arming a disgraced Italian accountant who thinks he's a general?"
"You get the keys to the Mediterranean," Dominic said without blinking. "Adrian controls the eastern shipping lanes, but his security framework relies on a centralized network of trusted capos in New York and Palermo. If we strike his distribution hubs simultaneously while cutting off his capital flow through the Caribbean, his empire collapses from the inside out. And when the dust settles, you take control of the South American export corridors without firing a single shot at his enforcers."
Salazar stared at him for a long, silent moment, weighing the risk against the staggering potential reward. In the brutal calculus of the underworld, a man driven by pure, unadulterated vengeance was the most dangerous—and useful—weapon money could buy.

"You have ten men and a battered cargo freighter docked at Puerto Cabello," Salazar finally said, standing up and tossing a heavy leather pouch of gold coins onto the table. "Don't disappoint me, Moretti. Because if you fail, I won't send you back to a quarry. I’ll feed you to the caimans."
Dominic caught the pouch, his eyes burning with a dark, triumphant fire. Soon, Adrian. Very soon.
