Chapter 1 - The Cold Stare and the Sirens

Arthur did not blink. His aged hands, calloused by four decades of maintaining the pristine facade of Vance Manor, held Sarah with gentle firmness. She was hyperventilating, her tear-stained face buried in the lapel of his tailored coat.
Above them, on the gilded second-floor mezzanine, Eleanor Vance stood frozen. Her manicured hands remained suspended over the marble balustrade where, moments earlier, she had executed her calculated strike. The faint, high-pitched scream of emergency sirens echoed from the distant iron gates, cutting through the suffocating silence of the grand foyer.
"Emergency dispatcher," a sharp voice barked through Arthur’s phone speaker. "What is your location?"
"Vance Estate, 100 Grand Boulevard," Arthur spoke, his voice unnervingly calm, a terrifying contrast to the pulse-pounding horror in the room. "I am reporting an attempted homicide. The matriarch, Eleanor Vance, has just physically assaulted and shoved her eight-month pregnant daughter-in-law from the second-story balcony. The victim is unconscious but breathing. Dispatch police and trauma medical units immediately."
A collective gasp rippled across the grand foyer. The staff, usually trained to be invisible, looked up in sheer horror. Eleanor’s face drained of color, her haughty composure shattering into jagged pieces.
"Arthur! You insubordinate old fool!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as she clutched the railing. "How dare you fabricate such lies in my house! You lost your mind! She tripped! She slipped on her own clumsy feet!"
Arthur slowly raised his head. His eyes locked onto Eleanor with a deadly, quiet intensity that made the multi-millionaire stepmother take an involuntary step back.
"The security cameras in the south gallery were upgraded last Tuesday, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said, his tone chillingly smooth. "Every angle of the balcony is captured in high-definition audio and video. And unlike the staff you have intimidated for decades, those servers sync directly to an off-site cloud."
Eleanor’s breath hitched. Her gaze darted toward the tiny black dome hidden beneath the intricate plasterwork of the ceiling.
Down below, Sarah groaned softly, her hand frantically clutching her swollen belly. "Arthur... my baby... please..."
"Hold on, my dear," Arthur whispered, softening his tone as he gently laid his coat over her shivering frame. "The ambulance is at the gates."
The heavy oak doors of the manor burst open. Paramedics flooded the foyer alongside armed police officers, their boots pounding against the imported Italian marble. Within seconds, the tranquil graveyard of secrets turned into an active crime scene.
"That woman overhead!" the lead officer bellowed, pointing directly at Eleanor. "Do not move! Step away from the ledge!"
As paramedics rushed to stabilize Sarah, Eleanor’s panic turned into manic rage. She spun around to bolt toward her private sanctuary—her master suite—only to freeze in her tracks. Standing at the end of the corridor, his face pale and eyes burning with utter disbelief, was Julian Vance—her stepson, Sarah’s husband, and the sole heir to the Vance fortune.

Julian held a shattered vase in his trembling hand. He had just walked through the side entrance. He had seen everything.
