Chapter 5 - The ICU Confession

Back at St. Jude's Hospital, the early morning light filtered through the blinds of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Sarah lay in a recovery bed, weak but conscious, holding the hand of her husband. Beside them, through the glass incubator, lay their newborn son—tiny, hooked up to monitors, but breathing steadily.

"He looks just like your father," Sarah whispered, her voice raspy.

Julian smiled gently, kissing her forehead. "His name is Arthur. Arthur Vance."

Arthur, standing quietly near the door, visibly shuddered. A rare tear welled in the old man's eye, but he quickly wiped it away, bowing his head in humility.

"Mr. Vance... young master... I do not deserve such an honor," Arthur stammered softly. "I was a coward for fifteen years. I let that evil woman control the house out of fear."

"You saved my life, Arthur," Sarah said, reaching out her hand to him. "And you saved my baby. If you hadn't caught me..." She shuddered, unable to finish the sentence.

"It was my duty, ma'am," Arthur replied softly, stepping forward to gently clasp her hand. "And my penance."

Suddenly, the door to the ICU room burst open. A young woman in a trench coat, drenched in rain, stood in the doorway. Her hair was disheveled, and her eyes were wide with frantic urgency.

Julian immediately stood up, stepping between the woman and his family. "Who are you? How did you get up here?"

The woman took off her wet coat, revealing a birthmark on her collarbone that made Julian’s heart stop. It was a distinctive, star-shaped mark—the exact same mark Julian’s mother had in old family photographs.

"Julian..." the woman gasped, tears streaming down her face. "Don't trust the butler. He's lying to you!"
