Chapter 3 - Toxins in the Tea

The waiting room of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was suffocatingly quiet. The hum of fluorescence lights overhead felt like a physical weight on Julian’s shoulders as he paced the polished corridor.

Hours felt like days. Finally, the heavy double doors opened, and Dr. Harrison, the chief obstetric surgeon, stepped out, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Doctor! How are they?" Julian rushed forward. Arthur stood quietly behind him, his posture stiff and attentive.

"Your wife is stabilized, Mr. Vance," Dr. Harrison said, releasing a tired sigh. "The fall caused placental abruption, but thanks to the swift intervention at the scene, we were able to perform an emergency C-section. Your son is in the NICU. He is small, but he is a fighter."

Julian let out a ragged sob of relief, dropping his face into his hands. "Thank God... thank God."

"However," Dr. Harrison’s voice turned gravely serious, "there is something else you need to know. Something that concerns the police."

Julian froze, looking up. "What do you mean?"

"During the emergency procedure, we ran routine toxicology panels on Sarah," Dr. Harrison explained, pulling a digital tablet from his coat. "We found high trace amounts of Thallium in her bloodstream—a tasteless, odorless heavy metal poison. It has been administered to her in low doses over the last three months."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror. "Poison? No... no, that’s impossible! She only eats food prepared at the mansion!"

Arthur stepped forward, his eyes darkening. "The Earl Grey tea. Mrs. Vance insisted on personally brewing Sarah’s morning tea every single day for the past quarter."

The realization struck Julian like a physical blow. Eleanor hadn't just pushed Sarah in a fit of sudden rage—she had been systematically executing a slow, agonizing murder for months to ensure Sarah and the baby would never inherit the Vance estate.

"If she hadn't fallen today," Dr. Harrison added quietly, "the poison would have caused a silent stillbirth within forty-eight hours, followed by organ failure in your wife. The fall actually saved their lives by forcing an immediate delivery before the toxin reached lethal levels."

Julian’s sorrow instantly transformed into pure, unadulterated fury. He turned to Arthur. "Where is the ledger?"

Arthur opened his coat and produced the black book. "Right here, sir. And it contains far more than just the poison receipts."
