Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Butler

The room plunged into an uncomfortable, terrifying silence. The heart monitors beeped in rhythmic cadence as Julian stared at the stranger.
"Who are you?" Julian demanded again, his hand instinctively reaching into his coat pocket where his phone was.
"My name is Clara," the woman cried out, holding up a tarnished silver locket. "I am your half-sister! Our mother didn't die fifteen years ago, Julian! Eleanor didn't kill her—she had her locked away in a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland!"
Julian gasped, staggering back. "What?!"
"And Arthur..." Clara pointed a trembling finger at the aged butler. "Arthur wasn't protecting you! He was Eleanor's accomplice! He was the one who signed the admission papers to keep our mother locked away so he could blackmail Eleanor for forty years!"
Julian turned around, his eyes filled with horror and confusion, looking at Arthur.
Arthur did not run. He did not yell. He simply closed his eyes and let out a long, heavy sigh that seemed to carry forty years of unbearable weight.
"Is this true, Arthur?" Julian’s voice cracked with deep betrayal. "Is it?!"
"It is... half true, Master Julian," Arthur whispered softly, opening his eyes. "I signed the papers. I was the one who drove your mother to Switzerland."
Sarah let out a gasp of utter shock, pulling the blanket tight around herself. "Arthur... no..."
"Why?" Julian roared, grabbing Arthur by the lapels of his suit. "I trusted you! I named my son after you!"
"Because if I didn't send her away," Arthur said, tears finally overflowing down his aged cheeks, "Eleanor was going to have her assassinated that night! Eleanor had already hired men to fake a car accident. Sending her to Switzerland under a pseudonym was the only way to keep your mother alive!"
Clara froze. "What?"

"I locked her away to save her life!" Arthur sobbed, dropping to his knees before Julian. "I paid the medical bills out of my own pocket using the money I blackmailed from Eleanor! Every dollar I squeezed out of that evil woman went directly to keeping your mother safe and comfortable in Zurich!"
