Chapter 5 - The Secret VerdictAn hour later, Grant brought a tray of sliced apples and juice to the island. Maya and Nora were knee-deep in a fierce debate over whether glow-in-the-dark stars belonged in the ocean or on the ceiling.

"If the stars go underwater, they'll get soggy," Nora argued passionately.
"Not if they're waterproof stars, Agent Nora," Maya countered, sticking a star directly onto the forehead of the plastic horse with the broken tail. "Space-age technology. Very exclusive."
Nora burst into genuine, ringing laughter—the kind Grant hadn't heard echoing through his house since before Lauren left for California.
Later that evening, after Maya had packed up her glitter and promised to return next weekend to help finish the underwater mayoral office, Grant walked her to the front door.
"Thank you," Grant said quietly, the porch light casting a soft glow over his face. "She hasn't laughed like that in years."
"She’s a brilliant architect," Maya smiled, adjusting the strap of her canvas bag. "She just needs a client who doesn't want to bulldoze her imagination."
"And what about you? Did you pass the test?"
Maya raised an eyebrow, a teasing glint in her amber eyes. "What test? I was just here for the glitter, Calloway. See you at the library."
She stepped out into the cool night air. Grant watched her car pull away, then walked slowly back inside.
He found Nora sitting at the kitchen island. In front of her plate was a folded piece of purple construction paper.
Grant’s heart skipped a beat, memories of Celeste’s note flashing in his mind. He opened it slowly.
Inside, written in messy, triumphant handwriting, were six words:
May you like
She can stay. She has good glitter.
Grant smiled, folding the note and sliding it right next to the other one in his jacket pocket.
