Chapter 9 - The Midnight Intruder at Cherry CreekThey hit eighty miles per hour all the way back to Cherry Creek.

When Grant’s SUV tore into the driveway of his estate, the exterior floodlights were blazing. The back glass patio door was shattered, jagged shards glistening in the snow like diamonds.

"Stay in the car," Grant ordered, throwing open his door.

"Not a chance," Maya snapped, grabbing a heavy brass snow scraper from the trunk floor and following him right behind.

They breached the back entrance, moving through the darkened kitchen with absolute stealth. Footsteps echoed heavily upstairs—toward Nora’s bedroom.

Grant’s heart hammered against his ribs. If Lauren had sent someone to take Nora...

He charged up the stairs, throwing open the door to Nora’s room.

There was no kidnapper in a ski mask.

Instead, sitting cross-legged on Nora’s pink rug was eight-year-old Nora herself, wide awake, wearing her dinosaur pajamas, and holding a flashlight. Standing right beside her, nervously dusting glass off her designer coat, was Lauren.

"Nora!" Grant gasped, rushing across the room and pulling his daughter into his arms. "Are you okay? What happened?"

"I heard a noise downstairs," Nora said calmly, blinking up at her father. "I came down and found her trying to pick the lock on your office filing cabinet."

Grant turned his furious gaze toward Lauren, who looked panicked and cornered.

"You broke into my house?" Grant snarled, stepping protectively in front of Nora and Maya. "Have you completely lost your mind?"

"I needed the financial records from the Calloway Trust!" Lauren screamed, her composure finally shattering completely. "If I don't prove my liquidity to the family court by Monday, my petition is thrown out! I was desperate!"

"Desperation doesn't give you the right to terrorize my daughter," a sharp voice cut through the room.

Maya stepped forward, her posture rigid, her amber eyes burning with righteous fury. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and turned the screen toward Lauren.

"By the way, Lauren?" Maya smiled coldly. "While you were screaming your confessions in the hallway, my voice recorder app was running. And I just sent a full copy to Grant's lead corporate attorney, the district attorney, and three major news outlets."

Lauren’s face turned the color of ash. "You... you recorded me?"

"Welcome to the real world," Maya said sweetly. "Where actions have consequences, and glitter isn't the only thing that sticks."
