Chapter 7 - The Ghost from CaliforniaThe music ground to a halt. Whispers swept through the ballroom like wildfire.

Lauren Whitfield, looking wealthier, sharper, and colder than she had seven years ago when she walked out with three suitcases, strode directly toward Grant, Maya, and Marcus.

"Good evening, Grant," Lauren said, her voice cutting through the ambient noise like shattered glass. "I hear you’ve been very busy playing house."

Grant stepped protectively in front of Maya, his jaw clenched so tight muscles ticked along his cheek. "What are you doing here, Lauren? You gave up all custody rights when you left for California."

"I gave up custody when I was young, foolish, and overwhelmed," Lauren countered smoothly, stepping closer. "My circumstances have changed. I have a stable home now, international backing, and a legal team ready to petition for full custody of Nora. A billionaire CEO raising a child with a broke graduate student? Any family court judge in Colorado will laugh you out of the room."

Maya stepped out from behind Grant. Her amber eyes locked onto Lauren with a terrifying, razor-sharp intensity.

"You abandoned a four-year-old child for a documentary filmmaker," Maya said, her voice low, steady, and venomous. "You missed seven years of birthdays, nightmares, and first days of school. You don't want Nora, Lauren. You want a trophy to rehabilitate your public image after your last venture fell through."

Lauren sneered, looking Maya up and down. "And who are you? The unpaid babysitter lecturing me on motherhood?"

"I'm the person who actually knows what color Nora paints the ocean," Maya replied coldly. "Which is more than you'll ever know."

Grant looked at Maya, stunned by her fierce loyalty, before turning his gaze back to his ex-wife with absolute, terrifying finality.

"You want a legal battle, Lauren?" Grant whispered, his voice dangerously low. "My sixty million dollars will buy every courtroom in this state before you even step foot inside one. You will never lay a hand on my daughter."
