Chapter 6 - The Corporate AmbushThree months passed like a blur of quiet domesticity and heated late-night debates over coffee. Maya had become a fixture in their lives—not as a girlfriend, not yet, but as a safe harbor in Grant’s rigidly structured world.

However, high society in Denver does not ignore a billionaire CEO for long.
Word spread through charity circuits and boardrooms that Grant Calloway had stopped dating elite corporate attorneys and luxury hotel executives, spending his weekends instead with an unknown, ink-stained graduate student.
The breaking point arrived at the annual Calloway Urban Development Winter Gala, held at the historic Brown Palace Hotel.
Grant had asked Maya to accompany him. She had protested, arguing that her only formal wear was a vintage velvet dress she bought off a second-hand rack, but Grant had insisted. When she descended the grand staircase of his home that evening, wearing an emerald-green velvet dress that made her amber eyes burn bright, Grant had momentarily forgotten how to breathe.
As they entered the grand ballroom, the room went dead silent.
Flashbulbs popped. Society columnists whispered behind jeweled fans. And waiting right at the edge of the VIP reception area was Marcus Hale, Grant’s business partner, alongside a very unhappy Victoria Ames.
"Grant," Marcus hissed, stepping forward with a glass of champagne in hand. "Are you out of your mind? Bringing a university student to the most influential event of the year? The board members from the pension fund are already asking questions."
Victoria stepped up beside Marcus, her eyes sweeping over Maya’s vintage velvet dress with undisguised contempt. "Don't tell me, Grant. Is this your new 'board of directors' recruitment strategy? Or did you pick her up at a bake sale?"
Maya didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray, her expression icy and completely composed.
Before Grant could step forward and eviscerate Victoria with a single sentence, the ballroom doors swung open wide, and a woman in a sweeping white designer gown stepped inside.

The blood drained entirely from Grant’s face.
It was Lauren. His ex-wife. Back from California, flanked by a high-powered attorney, and holding a legal document stamped by a family court judge.
