Chapter 8 - The Emergency EvacuationThe gala descended into utter chaos. Reporters swarmed the perimeter, flashes blinding them from every angle, while security guards rushed to block the press.

"We need to leave, now," Grant muttered, grabbing Maya’s hand and pushing past Marcus and a stunned Victoria.

They bypassed the front exit, slipping through the hotel’s service corridors into the frigid Denver night. They didn't speak until they were safely locked inside the bulletproof interior of Grant’s black SUV, speeding away from the flashing lights of the Brown Palace.

In the backseat, Maya stared out the window, her hands trembling slightly against her velvet skirt.

"I'm sorry," Maya whispered. "I shouldn't have lost my temper back there. I just... the thought of anyone taking Nora away from you—from us—makes my blood boil."

Grant pulled the car over to the side of a quiet, tree-lined street near Cheesman Park, cutting the engine. He turned in his seat, reaching out to gently cup Maya’s trembling hand.

"Look at me, Maya," Grant said softly.

She turned, her amber eyes shining in the dashboard light.

"You didn't do anything wrong," Grant said, his voice thick with emotion. "You defended my daughter like she was your own. No one has ever stood beside me like that. Not my business partners, not my mother, and certainly not the women I used to date."

"Grant..."

"I didn't plan for any of this," Grant confessed, his thumb tracing the back of her hand. "I planned my business, my investments, my real estate portfolio. But falling in love with you, Maya... that was the only unplanned decision I ever made that actually saved me."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Before she could answer, Grant’s phone rang. It was an urgent call from his home security system.
