Chapter 1 - The Ultimatum"Yes, sir?"

Claire’s voice trembled slightly, though she planted her feet on the hardwood floor, determined to shield her daughter with her own body. The silence in the vast, mahogany-paneled office stretched like a taut wire. Outside, the Chicago wind beat against the reinforced glass, but inside, the air felt utterly frozen.
Adrian Vale didn't move immediately. He shifted his weight, his broad shoulders rising slightly as he sat upright on the leather sofa. His sharp, slate-gray eyes lingered for a fraction of a second on the stuffed rabbit clutched in Lily's small hand before moving back to the mother.
"If I ever catch another stray animal—or a stray human—walking past the third-floor security perimeter," Adrian said, his voice dropping into that quiet, gravelly register that made seasoned mob captains sweat through their custom suits, "I will hold you personally responsible, Claire."
Claire flinched, her eyes squeezing shut. "I understand. I'll pack my things—"
"I didn't say you were fired," Adrian interrupted, his tone chillingly flat. "A breach of security of this magnitude requires a penalty. Starting tomorrow, your duties are expanded. You will clean the master penthouse on the top floor. Personally. No substitutes. And you will bring the child with you, provided she stays out of my sight. Am I understood?"
Claire stared at him, caught completely off guard. The penthouse was legendary in the syndicate; it was Adrian's private sanctuary, a place no member of the cleaning staff had been allowed to enter alone in over three years.
"The... the top floor?" Claire whispered.
"Do you have an objection?"
"No, Mr. Vale. Thank you, sir."
"Get out," he commanded softly.
Claire scooped Lily into her arms, pressing the toddler's face into her shoulder as she practically fled the office. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind them.
Adrian leaned back against the cushions, staring at the spot where the child had rested. The indentation on his white shirt was still visible.
He reached down, his fingers brushing against the gray wool blanket Lily had thrown over him. For three years, his life had been an exercise in absolute control, vengeance, and cold calculation. Every move calculated, every rival neutralized.
Yet, a three-year-old girl had bypassed three lines of armed security, walked into a fortress of violence, and read him a story about a sleeping king.
"Daniel," Adrian said without turning his head.
From the shadows near the corridor entrance, a massive man in a charcoal suit stepped forward. Daniel Mercer, scarred across his left jawline, looked uneasy.
"Boss?"
"Find out why her preschool closed down today," Adrian ordered, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the window where the white cat still slept. "And find out who owns the debt on her apartment building."
Daniel blinked, surprised. "The building on 4th Street? It's owned by the Syndicate's real estate front, boss. The Moran family."
"Not anymore," Adrian said coldly. "Transfer the deed to Claire Bennett. Free and clear. By sunset."
May you like
Daniel swallowed hard. "Consider it done. But boss... the Moran family won't like losing that property."
Adrian stood up, adjusting his cuffs, his face cast in a dangerous shadow. "Let them come talk to me."
