Chapter 4 - Blood in the SnowWith the speed of a striking cobra, Adrian didn't raise his gun—he threw it.

The heavy steel butt of the firearm slammed directly into the intruder's wrist with bone-shattering force. The man shrieked in agony, dropping the hunting knife as his hand went limp.
Before the knife hit the carpet, Adrian closed the distance between them. A devastating right hook caught the intruder square in the jaw, sending him crashing backward through the remaining glass of the broken window into the freezing Chicago night.
Crash.
Shards of glass rained down into the alley below.
Adrian lunged forward, grabbing the pink bundle from the icy windowsill. He pulled Lily into his arms, pressing her small, shivering body against his chest.
The toddler buried her face in his coat, sobbing hysterically. "It was cold... the bad man took my rabbit..."
Adrian looked down at her, his heart—frozen for three years—suddenly hammering against his ribs like a trapped animal. He stripped off his expensive wool overcoat, wrapped it completely around the child, and pressed her tightly to him.
"You're safe," Adrian murmured, his voice uncharacteristically gentle. "I've got you. Nobody is touching you."
Down in the alley, Daniel Mercer and three armed guards rushed around the corner of the building, weapons drawn, surrounding the groaning intruder who had fallen onto a massive pile of unshoveled snow.
Daniel kicked the man's legs out from under him, pinning him face-down into the slush. "Clear!" Daniel shouted up toward the window. "Boss, you okay?"
"Secure the perimeter," Adrian called down, his voice cold enough to freeze fire. "And bring him to the basement. I want to know every single person who signed off on this hit."
Adrian turned away from the window, carrying the trembling child back down the hallway.
When the elevator doors opened on the penthouse level, Claire was waiting. When she saw Adrian stepping out with Lily wrapped in his blood-stained coat, she let out a piercing cry and dropped to her knees.
"Lily!"
Adrian gently knelt down, placing the little girl into her mother's shaking arms. Claire clutched her child so hard it seemed like she was trying to fuse their bodies back together, covering her face, hair, and hands in desperate, tearful kisses.
"Mommy..." Lily sobbed. "The bad man... but the tall man broke him."
Claire looked up at Adrian. Her eyes were red, swollen, and filled with a profound, terrifying gratitude. The blood on Adrian's sleeve from the broken window gleamed under the penthouse lights.
"Mr. Vale..." Claire whispered, her voice breaking. "I... I don't know how to thank you."
"Don't thank me yet," Adrian said, standing up and brushing a speck of glass from his trousers. "The Moran family thinks they can reach into my house and touch what is mine."
Claire froze, her arms tightening around Lily. "What... what are you going to do?"
Adrian walked toward the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the blizzard raging over the Chicago skyline. The city lights flickered below like distant campfires in a war zone.
"I'm going to finish a war they started three years ago," Adrian said softly. "Pack a bag, Claire."
"What?"
"You and Lily are leaving this building tonight," Adrian ordered without turning around. "My private estate in Lake Geneva. Safe house Alpha. Daniel will drive you."
"And you?" Claire asked, her voice trembling.
May you like
Adrian turned his head slightly, a dark, lethal smile touching the corner of his lips.
"I have some cleaning of my own to do."
