Chapter 9 - The ConfessionBy dawn, the snow around the Lake Geneva estate was stained with the quiet aftermath of a battle that the world would never read about in the morning papers. The Rossi strike team had been entirely neutralized, their communications jammed, and their leaders captured by Daniel Mercer’s loyalists.

Inside the grand library, the morning sun poured through the tall windows, casting long golden beams across the Persian rugs.

Claire sat on the velvet sofa, holding a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold. The heavy oak doors opened softly, and Adrian walked in.

He looked exhausted. There was a faint smudge of soot on his cheek, and his knuckles were bruised and bloodied, but his posture was completely erect.

Claire stood up instantly, her eyes scanning him frantically for injuries. "Are you... are you okay? I heard the explosions upstairs..."

"It's over," Adrian said softly, stopping a few feet away from her. "The Rossi family will never bother us again. Chicago is quiet."

Claire let out a long, shuddering breath, a tear slipping down her cheek as the overwhelming tension finally broke inside her. She covered her mouth with her hand, her shoulders shaking.

Adrian closed the remaining distance between them. Without thinking, he reached out, his large, warm hand gently gripping her shoulder.

"You're safe now, Claire," he said, his voice dropping into a tone so tender it felt entirely foreign to him. "No more running. No more hiding."

Claire looked up into his slate-gray eyes, seeing the profound depth of sorrow and protection hidden beneath the surface. She reached out, her trembling fingers gently touching the bruise on his knuckles.

"You didn't have to fight an entire syndicate for us, Adrian," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I'm just... I'm just a maid."

"You were never just a maid," Adrian corrected quietly, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. "From the moment that little girl walked into my office and read me a story about a sleeping king... my life stopped being empty."

Claire’s heart hammered against her ribs like a caged bird. "Adrian..."

"I spent three years hiding behind oak doors and deadbolts," Adrian confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "Believing I didn't deserve peace after what happened to my sister. But holding her... and looking at you... I realized I don't want to live in the dark anymore."

Claire didn't pull away. Instead, she stepped closer, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face into his chest—in the exact same spot where Lily had fallen asleep three weeks ago.

Adrian wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her tightly, feeling the warmth of another human being filling the hollow space inside his chest that had remained shut for three long years.
