Chapter 3 - The Midnight IntruderAt 3:45 AM, the security alarms in the penthouse didn't sound. That was the most terrifying part.

Adrian sat at his dark mahogany desk on the top floor, reviewing digital ledgers on a secure monitor. The apartment was dead silent except for the low hum of the HVAC system and the howling wind outside.

Suddenly, a soft click echoed from the private elevator foyer.

Adrian's hand dropped instinctively to the Beretta resting in his open desk drawer. He didn't draw it; he simply waited, his eyes locked on the double archway leading into the study.

A shadow detached itself from the hallway wall.

It wasn't a professional assassin—too loud, too clumsy. The footsteps were light, frantic, but deliberate. A moment later, a small figure stumbled into the doorway.

It was Claire.

She was wearing her gray maid's uniform, but her hair was disheveled, and her face was stark white. She was clutching a heavy brass candlestick in her right hand, her knuckles bruised and white from the grip.

"Mr. Vale," she whispered, her voice shaking violently.

Adrian slowly pulled his hand away from the desk drawer and leaned back, his eyes narrowing. "You have a habit of wandering into places you shouldn't be, Claire. Especially after hours."

"Someone's... someone's in the staff wing," she choked out, pressing her back against the wall as if expecting a bullet at any second. "I heard glass break. I went to check on Lily, and... and her room was empty."

Adrian’s expression shifted from cold indifference to absolute, lethal focus. In less than a second, he was on his feet.

"Empty?"

"She's gone," Claire sobbed, a tear finally breaking down her cheek. "Please... I searched everywhere. The back service stairwell door is forced open. Please, Mr. Vale, she's only three—"

Before she could finish, Adrian brushed past her with terrifying speed, his stride eating up the distance to the service elevator. He pressed a master keycard into the panel and overrode the security lock.

"Stay here," Adrian commanded over his shoulder.

"No! I'm coming with you—"

"I said stay here, Claire!" Adrian turned, his eyes blazing with a fury that made the air feel thin. "If anyone touches a hair on that child's head, I won't just kill them. I will dismantle everything they have ever loved. Stay."

The elevator doors slid shut before she could argue.

Down in the third-floor staff quarters, the hallway was freezing. The winter storm had shattered a stained-glass window, sending glittering shards across the Persian rug. Footsteps echoed down the emergency stairwell—heavy, dragging footsteps.

Adrian stepped out of the service lift, his hand now firmly gripping the 9mm pistol at his side. The hallway was dim, illuminated only by the flashing red light of an emergency exit sign.

Ten feet ahead, a massive figure in a black tactical balaclava was dragging a small, squirming bundle wrapped in a pink blanket.

"Drop her," Adrian’s voice echoed through the corridor like thunder.

The intruder froze. Slowly, he turned around, pressing a heavy hunting knife directly against Lily's tiny throat. The toddler let out a muffled whimper, her eyes wide with terror in the red emergency light.

"Step back, Vale!" the masked man rasped, his voice disguised by a voice modulator. "Drop the piece or the kid gets her throat slit right now! The Moran family says hello!"

Adrian stopped dead in his tracks. The gun in his hand felt heavy, but his breathing was unnaturally steady. The monster inside him—the ruthless crime boss who had built an empire on blood and fear—surfaced completely, drowning out every ounce of restraint.

"You made a mistake coming into my building," Adrian whispered softly.

"I said drop the gun!" the intruder screamed, pressing the blade deeper until a tiny bead of crimson appeared on Lily's neck.

Adrian's eyes locked on the blade.

And then, he lowered the weapon.

The intruder laughed harshly, relaxing his grip by a millimeter—just enough to start backing toward the broken window.

It was all the opening Adrian needed.
